Top performers from Day 2 of AL-MS All-Star Classic

quote:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – On day two of competition at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, the teams took part in another two-a-day session and with the exception of some banged up players, a lot of familiar faces emerged. These are our top performers from Wednesday.

Alpha Dog

Malik Heath, WR, Mississippi

We didn’t give him the top honors from Tuesday’s showing so it’s only fitting that he takes home the title for Wednesday’s effort because he put on the same dominant performance. Talking all the way through practice, Heath continued to showcase the best route-running precision and downfield speed at the event. He’ll have a concentration drop from time to time but the 6-foot-2 talent has natural hands and can make the spectacular grab. He’ll leave the week as a stock up guy and showed why Dan Mullen wants to bring him to Florida with him so badly. He remains committed to Mississippi State currently.

The Next Five from Mississippi

1. Fabien Lovett, DT – Mississippi is playing a 3-4 defense this week and Lovett is a perfect fit in the 4-technique role as a guy that can effectively play two gaps. He’s the strongest defensive lineman for Mississippi and he can control offensive linemen in front of him and re-set the line of scrimmage really effectively. The Mississippi State commit still plans on taking visits in January before signing.

2. Johnquarise Patterson, WR – Patterson is the second Mississippi State wide receiver commit on this list and he once again showed outstanding fluidity in and out of his routes and soft hands at when the ball arrives.

3. Cameron Gardner, WR – The third Mississippi State wide receiver commit on the list, Gardner was a big, friendly target for his quarterbacks and is a bit of a mix between the other two receivers above. He’s got some good route-running ability, and natural ball skills and though he’s not overly dynamic, he knows how to get open and finish.

4. Karlos Dillard, LB – A kid with offers from Princeton, Cornell, Air Force and Army, Dillard is hoping for an offer from South Alabama over the next few weeks and he certainly looks deserving. He’s an athletic linebacker that gets to the ball in a hurry.

5. Qvaius Currie, DT – Currie is heading to the junior college ranks and while his size brings serious limitations, he’s extremely quick and active on the inside and even showcased some power and push against bigger offensive linemen.

Top seven from Alabama

1. CD Daniels, DB – His second strong outing of the week, Daniels is a Memphis commit that has a ton of length and range at 6-foot-2. He arrived as a cornerback but I really liked what he showed breaking on the football from the safety position on Wednesday. Daniels showed outstanding instincts, had at least one interception and nearly snagged a few others based on diagnosing routes really quickly.

2. Cameron Hill, OL – Despite playing left tackle all year for his high school, Hill is lining up at center this week and he’s been outstanding. That he wasn’t listed on Tuesday’s top performers was nothing more than an oversight. The kid plays with great leverage, understands how to attack defensive linemen and is really smart. He has offers from the likes of Tulane and UMass and if he was bigger he’d have a lot more.

3a. James Foster 3b. Jack West, QB – This is a bit of a cop-out but both guys really took turns having some nice moments on Wednesday. The day was brisk and windy so not every throw is going to be perfect but for the most part it was a really clean afternoon for two quarterbacks with really similar arm ability. Foster is a priority for LSU, Texas A&M and Florida State while West is committed to Stanford.

4. Nathaniel Watson, WR – The wide receiver group for Alabama is walking wounded which makes Watson’s steady, consistent presence all that much more impressive and important. The Mississippi State commit catches everything he touches and has a big frame to box out defenders.

5. Kevontae' Ruggs, S – Though I’ve got him listed as a safety here, I really think his best position in college is a nickel linebacker or some sort of hybrid role. He’s not natural turning and running right now but he’s really good underneath and he also likes the physical aspect of the game. He made a bunch of plays on the football for the second straight day.

6. Demontrez Brown, WR - One of the few healthy wide receivers through three practices, showed great body control and athleticism during 1on1 and 7on7 periods. The Troy commitment’s breaks put one DB on the turf and a back-shoulder grab along the sidelines was the highlight of the day.

Alabama put an offer on the table for 2019 three-star offensive tackle Renato Brown of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Palm Beach Central on Wednesday night, he reported on Twitter.

Several other programs have offered including Louisville, Pitt, and Florida.

At 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, Brown is rated the No. 57 offensive tackle in the nation per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Anyone heard anything one way or another on Emory Jones? I think OSU anticipates a transfer in the offseason, so including Jones, there would likely be 4 QBs on the roster, so a normal number. I do like Baldwin's tape from Lake Travis for the record who OSU got last week, so I wouldn't be completely crushed with Jones (but STILL WANT HIM BAD)

Does Bama need a QB this cycle after taking 2 last cycle and the elder statesman only being a junior? Do you have only 3 or 4 on the roster?

Yes. Bama has only 3 QBs on scholarship Jalen Hurts (soph), Tua Tagovialoa (frosh), Mac Jones (frosh).

we only have 3 on the roster, 2 of which are true freshman. Either hurts or tua will most likely transfer depending on who wins the job next year, so we pretty much have to take a qb

Well we only have 3 on the roster right now. We had 2 transfer last year after they lost out to Hurts. Its good to take 1 every year and plan on transfers. Plus, with these running QBs you have to factor in injuries, as a OSU fan knows.

He'll just be a position coach. With his connections, I believe it's a pretty good hire. Seems highly thought of.

Eyabi Anoma committing on Dec. 22

Eyabi Anoma has played football for only two years yet is one of the nation’s 10 best high school football players, according to the 247sports composite. That’s really all you need to know about Anoma’s freakish abilities.

Anoma was a basketball player at Randallstown High School before transferring to St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) shortly before his junior season. The 5-star defensive end was getting some looks by colleges on the hardwood but nothing matching the level of attention he’s received on the gridiron.

It took Anoma just a few games last season to start showing his potential in pads.

“He saw everyone getting recruited, getting offers and committing in their junior year,” St. Frances coach Henry Russell told SEC Country. “He’s sitting there with no offers midway through his junior season. I told him to not worry. By this time next year, I said, you’re going to be tired of recruiting and you’ll be able to go wherever you want. We knew he was special. When he started to put it all together, we knew he was going to be in a position to pick the college of his choice.”

That’s where Anoma is at now. The nation’s No. 2 weakside defensive end has offers from top programs across the country, but Alabama, Maryland and Michigan have emerged as the top contenders. The Crimson Tide have been considered the favorites for several months now. Even though he’s from Maryland, last weekend saw Anoma make his fourth official visit to Tuscaloosa.

“He got to spend a little more time with the coaches, Coach [Nick] Saban especially,” Russell said. “He really enjoyed spending some time off the field with him. That was the difference this time around. The coaches were a little less busy with football. He got to get more on a personal level with everybody. He had a good trip.”

The Under Armour All-American will make his college decision on Dec. 22, which is the final day of the early signing period. He’s expected to sign with his college of choice on that day and enrollee early, according to a source close to Alabama. His academics are in check and he’s fully qualified, so there will be no concern on whether or not he’ll be able to enroll in January.

I fully expect Alabama to land his signature next week. There hasn’t been a moment since this summer where any source I’ve talked to near the Alabama program has felt worried about losing him to another program. Coming off this most recent official visit solidified the team’s chances at landing one of the nation’s best players.

His coach broke down why Anoma is so interested in Alabama.

“I think it’s a combination of a lot of things,” Russell said. “Alabama does a great job of getting guys to the NFL and putting their players in position to succeed. Coach Saban runs a great program. You have the academic support in place. All of the little things are taken care of in that program. Eyabi is also super competitive and hates losing. Alabama is that type of team. They don’t lose much. He thrives in those types of environments. I think that’s why he’s very attracted to what they offer.”

If Anoma does end up committing to the Tide, what kind of player would Alabama be getting?

“He’s a total freak, athletically,” Russell said. “He’s 6-foot-5 1/2, 235 pounds and can absolutely fly. He runs tremendously. He has a natural motor. Obviously, no one knew he was like that when he came here. He’s relentless on the field and he trains that way. He has a deep passion for succeeding and not failing. Those things fuel him. He learned how to play the game last year. He’s one of the best players I’ve seen in high school.”

Alabama doesn’t have any 5-star commitments in the 2018 class just yet. Anoma would be the first for the Tide this year if one doesn’t join Alabama before the 22nd.

ALABMA QUARTERBACKS SETTLE INTO GROOVE

Tuesday was an uneven day for Team Alabama QBs, but both James Foster and Stanford commit Jack West looked miles better on Wednesday. Part of that was due to a developing rhythm with new wide receivers. West probably looked a touch better than Foster in the morning session, but both made massive strides from the previous day. West’s defining throws of the session came on fade routes, on which he showed the type of touch he was missing on the previous day.

Foster, who also had a solid Wednesday performance, is considering Florida State, LSU and others.

CUNNINGHAM HAS SPECIAL POWER

Jalen Cunningham isn’t a complete defensive lineman at this juncture, but he was possibly the most powerful prospect on either team during workouts. Cunningham, who boasts a college-ready body, holds offers from Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia and others.

On Wednesday, Cunningham worked from the defensive tackle spot and overpowered most everyone he faced. He may rely a bit too heavily on the bull rush at times, but there’s no denying his effectiveness or the fact that he has the type of raw strength that will play well in any major conference.

ROSS PLAYS (WELL) THROUGH THE PAIN

Team Alabama wide receiver Justyn Ross worked out with a mildly injured ankle and still managed to create separation from most defensive backs. Asked how his ankle felt at one point during Wednesday’s morning practice, the five-star wide receiver responded with “bad.”

It was obvious that Ross wasn’t running at full speed, but his breaks were still sharp and he found creative ways to get separation during one-on-one work. Despite the pain, Ross never missed a rep or found his way to the training table.

It’s early and there will be a lot of recruits that surface obviously but there is literally zero DT’s from Alabama for the 2019 class. Literally. The highest rated DT is a 230 pounder from James Clemons in Huntsville. The only good news is that we have some crystal ball picks for the number 1 DT in the nation out of Amite HS in Louisiana. Ishmael Sopsher. Same HS as devonta smith right?
