Possibilities for 2020 DC that I've seen mentioned here and in other threads:
Retain Golding,
Muschamp,
Schumann,
Charlie Strong,
Quinn.
Barry Odom is out of work and was a hell of a DC. I'd add him to the why not pile?

Any other NFL coaches?
They need to really like the college game and all it entails. They also have to be great recruiters and understand the college game and rules.
Nick worked out well at Bama, as I think he genuinely liked the college game better. I'm not certain Sark wouldn't bounce back to the NFL if the door opens
I think a college hire either proven (Strong and Odom types) or up and comers (as Golding was thought to be) are preferred.
That said, Matt Patricia is living week to week. That would certainly grab headlines for the less than 1 yr he'd be on a college staff working for the college version of Belichick.

I'd even go so far as to use the next DC hire with a possible Saban succession plan in mind.
I.e., "could he be groomed?"
If that's the case, you go Quinn

Seriously, how many other top schools have their coaches poached year in and out?
honestly, I think this constant changeover is causing issues with discipline, etc. for the team.
The players are constantly getting new coaches, not able to develop a long term relationship.

Have to love that idea! Added him to the list.
This brings the updated list to:
Retain Golding,
Muschamp,
Schumann,
Charlie Strong,
Quinn,
Barry Odom,
Matt Patricia.

It has to hurt, and it's effect on recruiting may be even worse.

You think Saban would go for that type of defense?
I think Strong is an excellent teacher of defense on the practice field, an excellent game day coordinator, and that he and Saban are professional enough to sit down and and hash out the schematic details together.
And since he's getting paid a buyout, he comes cheap. Or you can pay him even more.

I know the chances of getting Brent Venables is very very slim but the man is a great DC. I think he would be a great fit at Bama with a couple of years under his belt with Saban.

Matt Patricia.
If the Lions fire him, he will be on an NFL staff again within a couple weeks.

Well Patricia does come from the Parcells/Belichick tree just like Saban...

I suspected/understood that, but "the list" is of semi-dream candidates anyway.

Strong has had several unsuccessful attempts at HC. I think he just may be a great DC and nothing more. So why not go and get paid for what you are great at a program that is willing to pay you for your services.
