USF just let him go. Runs a 3-3-5/4-3 Hybrid. Plus he's a hell of a recruiter

I'd get him and fully turn the defense over to him. Total control.

You think Saban would go for that type of defense?

Considering the last few big game performances and now no unbelievably elite QB to bail us out in 2020 beyond, he may want to consider it.

I guess I don't know what Saban is thinking, but he's approached situations like this before with an open mind towards adaptation. It wouldn't shock me at all if he decided that, like with the offense a few years ago, a defensive adaptation was necessary.

Now, what that adaptation is I don't know. And he may decide that our system still works (see Georgia) and it's just not being taught well enough, players weren't good enough, etc. I don't know.

It’s basically just a variant of the nickel as the base set. We already are in nickel something like 60% of the time, so it wouldn’t be that big of a transition.

I'll also add I think that he thought he was doing that with Golding. Golding just didn't work - be it inexperience at a high level, off field stuff, whatever.

I think Strong either goes to the NFL or joins a team like UA. He has not been successful as HC but his defenses have always done well.

Charlie come on down and join the Saban' Coach Rehabilitation Program.

If Golding does leave I don’t think saban will go outside of his coaching tree for a hire just the way he is I think.

I really dont think scheme was our problem. Not at all. Our problem(s) first and foremost was terrible inside linebacker play and coming in a close second was terrible preparation and coaching in general. I think a change was inevitable. No way was an old school, defensive minded guy like Saban gonna tolerate that level of ineptitude on the most important side of the ball.

I think that Schumann is in all liklihood the best all around option. Good defensive coach, has been calling defense at Georgia, great recruiter, very good position coach (ILB), Alabama guy to the core, knows Saban and everything that goes into the position. And finally, it robs Georgia of a great recruiter.

Possible negatives are that Kirby is clearly heavily involved in the defense (more so than Saban) so you don't know the entire extent of his authority, but he clearly is very involved. And he might not want to make the move.

If they made that move I'd be really happy.

We started several freshman on defense including some of the most important positions in our scheme. Combine that with no leadership, inability to open field tackle, individual play not team work(me me attitude).

Also was it Golding and the staff teaching the players to stripe the ball this year inside of just tackling? It seems we gave up a lot of yards trying to force a fumble instead of just bringing the guy down.

Saw Saban mention something early in the year about needing to improve on takeaways . It may have been a point if emphasis but the first man or two has to tackle and let others worry about stripping

Can't forget that Golding's background is in the secondary and he's been coaching ILB for the last 2 years...

Feels like we were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole

Yea - it wouldn't surprise me if that happened, but I have no clue how I'd feel about it.

Quinn has a history of being a very good defensive coach, but not much of it at the college level and his success in Seattle could easily be attributed to a system and not his own abilities. It'd be weird as hell to have our two coordinators be Dan Quinn and Steve Sarkisian.

I do think he'd be excellent with college kids and that he could be a very good college coach one day.
