Latest news, updates in Colorado Buffaloes' coaching search (BuffStampede)
quote:

Refresh this page for updates as Athletic Director Rick George and Associate Athletic Director Lance Carl continue their search for Colorado's next head football coach...

Saturday (Feb. 22) 9:14 AM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger provided the following report on the Inside the Herd message board:

It sounds like two more interviews will be conducted by Rick George and Lance Carl early this coming week, but keep in mind coaching searches are always fluid.

Bruce Feldman mentioned Alex Grinch and Graham Harrell as possibilities yesterday. Both are intriguing coordinators that would build excitement if hired at CU.

Harrell would be hard to pull from USC from what I’ve heard. And he is a “Texas guy” that would likely be a top candidate for head coaching jobs in the Lone Star State in the near future. We’ll see how it plays out, though. As I reported early last week, CU’s next head coach is expected to have a massive buyout for the first few years.

If Eric Bieniemy’s name comes up again in conjunction with Colorado’s opening again, just ignore it. That is done.

Naturally, Andy Avalos has been a name brought up to me by boosters and has been discussed on the board. He is an up-and-coming coordinator and he served as a graduate assistant at CU from 2006-08. But it does not sound like Boulder is where his heart is. Avalos played at Boise State, coached for the Broncos for seven seasons, and is thought to be the heir apparent to Bryan Harsin there.

Friday 11:54 AM: FOX Sports reporter Bruce Feldman is reporting Colorado "may reach out to Alex Grinch and Graham Harrell" as the Buffs continue to look for a new head coach. Both were part of BuffStampede.com's initial Coaching Hot Board.

Alex Grinch enjoyed successful coaching stints at Washington State and Ohio State, and Oklahoma's defense showed improvement during his first year as the defensive coordinator in Norman in 2019. He was reportedly a top candidate for Washington State's head coaching vacancy earlier this winter before Nick Rolovich was named Mike Leach's replacement. Grinch does not have head coaching experience, but his coaching stock has been rising rapidly.

Graham Harrell's name has come up for plenty of jobs recently and like Grinch, he is viewed as a rising star among many in the profession. The former Texas Tech gunslinger began his coaching career at Oklahoma State as a quality control coach in 2009 and he has been quickly rising up the coaching ranks. In addition to USC, he has coached at Washington State and North Texas. He has never been a head coach at any level, but he's only 34 years old. Harrell could help implement an exciting offensive scheme in Boulder.

Friday 10:26 AM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger has learned the inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Ross Els is leaving Boulder to join Mel Tucker's staff at Michigan State. He had been part of Colorado's staff since February of 2017.

Friday (Feb. 21) 6:42 AM: ESPN's Adam Schefter and 9News' Mike Klis both reported Eric Bieniemy has withdrawn his name from consideration for CU's head coaching job. While Buffs brass had been in communication with Bieniemy, according to BuffStampede.com's sources, he had never been formally offered the job. But regardless, it appears Bieniemy will be staying on as the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs with the hope of getting an NFL head coaching gig next winter. BuffStampede.com Staff Writer Chase Howell reported Bieniemy was expected to stay in Kansas City last week. Bieniemy interviewed with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and New York Giants for head coaching jobs after the 2019 season ended. James Palmer of the NFL Network tweeted that the Chiefs “organization is excited for him to return.”

I feel bad for the dozens of people who actually care about sports at Colorado. They are going to have to do the same thing Sparty did to hire Tucker away from them and pay someone 2-3x what they are worth.

That said, LOL @ Alfano. At least being close to his family out in Colorado will help him through this trying time.

Latest news, updates in Colorado Buffaloes' coaching search (BuffStampede)

Refresh this page for updates as Athletic Director Rick George and Associate Athletic Director Lance Carl continue their search for Colorado's next head football coach...

Saturday 6:48 PM: BuffStampede.com has been able to confirm reports Karl Dorrell is on the verge of being named the 27th full-time head football coach in Colorado history. When news broke that Dorrell had emerged as the front-runner to fill the Buffaloes’ coaching vacancy, Matt McChesney was one of the first people to express excitement over the expected hire on Twitter. Click here to read McChesney's comment on CU's expected hire

Saturday 1:50 PM:

Less than an hour after BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger reported on the Inside the Herd message board that Colorado's next head coach is expected to be someone that had not been previously a rumored candidate for the opening, Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel reported Karl Dorrell "has emerged as the favorite."
quote:

Pete Thamel @PeteThamel
Sources: Karl Dorrell has emerged as the favorite in the Colorado search. Numerous coaches involved in the job have been told they aren’t getting it. No deal done yet. But the Dolphins assistant and former UCLA head coach is trending as the top name.
2:47 PM - Feb 22, 2020

USA Today's Dan Wolken then followed up with a tweet that indicates Dorrell is the front-runner for the job:
quote:

Dan Wolken @DanWolken
Colorado is indeed working toward a deal with former UCLA coach/current Dolphins assistant Karl Dorrell, source tells @usatodaysports. He will be the coach there barring a last-minute snag. @PeteThamel had it first.
2:57 PM - Feb 22, 2020
quote:

Bruce Feldman @BruceFeldmanCFB
Have heard #CU brass feels like it has its new head coach from multiple sources, and hopes to have someone announced within the next 36 hours or so.
2:51 PM - Feb 22, 2020

Dorrell, who was promoted to assistant head coach of the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, has history in Boulder. He served as Colorado's receivers coach in 1992 and 1993, and was the Buffaloes' offensive coordinator and receivers coach from 1995-98. And his daughter Lauren Dorrell played volleyball at CU.

Dorrell's only prior head coaching experience came at UCLA between 2003-07. The Bruins went to a bowl game in each of their five seasons under his direction. They won 10 games in 2005. Dorrell was fired by the Bruins two years later, though, after going 6-6.

Originally from California, Dorrell played receiver at UCLA in the mid-'80s before beginning his coaching career at UCF in 1989. His coaching career has also included stops as the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Northern Arizona (1990-91), receivers coach at Arizona State (1994), offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Washington (1999), receivers coach for the Denver Broncos (2000-02), quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans (2012-13), offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Vanderbilt (2014), and receivers coach for the New York Jets (2015-18).

Dorrell has coached on the Miami Dolphins staff twice, as their receivers coach in 2008-10 and quarterbacks coach in 2011. He returned to their staff as the receivers coach in 2019.

Saturday (Feb. 22) 1:05 PM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger provided the following report on the Inside the Herd message board:

Everything I have heard in the last 24 hours leads me to believe this hire is going to be out of left field - a coach that has not been rumored yet for CU’s opening.

You are acting like CU is a blue blood. Compared to the rest of the candidates, this looks damn good for them. They were not getting Bienemy, so that nonsense needs to stop.
Presumably Sark said no, guess he is going the kirby route and looking for something bigger.
What did they botch? Coached there, played at UCLA so will recruit the area, his daughter went to CU and that goes a long way in a parents home, has NFL experience and was a HC in the conference.
Dont have a dog in the fight, but they did fine for them

Scott Cochran leaving Alabama for on-field coaching job in SEC (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Chris Low @ClowESPN
In talking today to Nick Saban, he’s quick to credit Scott Cochran for what he meant to @AlabamaFTBL. But Saban also told me Cochran wanted to pursue a new career path as an on-the-field coach, which Saban understands, but Saban wasn’t ready to go that route with him at Bama.

PODCAST: Cochran set to join UGA staff
quote:

On the heels of reports of Scott Cochran's imminent departure from Alabama as head strength and conditioning coordinator to Georgia in an on-the-field capacity, BOL staffers Travis Reier and Charlie Potter took to the Built By BamaOnLine Podcast Monday afternoon to discuss what the latest attrition to the Crimson Tide staff might mean.

Among the ramifications that were covered:
* How the latest departure of a Nick Saban era lifer might be perceived by those outside the program.
* Reasonable candidates to replace Cochran in a role he turned into one of the more visible in all of college football.
* The irony in Cochran joining UGA.
* What Cochran's biggest value as an on-the-field assistant might be.

Some in the media are making Scott Cochran's departure out to be a big deal. But it's just not, imo. From what I've seen, Saban didn't make much, if any, effort to get him to stay.

Just reading about what they've been saying on Finebaum today, you'd have thought Pope Francis had just died. The media has really been going overboard about this latest departure. But as you said, it doesn't look like Saban made a herculean effort to keep him in Tuscaloosa.

Nick Saban tells ESPN why Scott Cochran chose to leave Alabama (BamaOnLine | segments)
quote:

“Scott did a really good job for us here and was a big part of our success, but he was looking for a new career path,” Saban told ESPN. “He wanted to get on to the field coaching and would like one day, I think, to be a head coach. We didn’t really have anything here to offer him along those lines, and Georgia did. I understand him wanting to take on that path.”

“We’re in a good position to bring in somebody at the top of their profession, and I think we’ll have a lot of people interested,” Saban said. “I’m excited to see who all is out there.”
