Charlie Strong joins Nick Saban's staff at Alabama as analyst

LINK

Another former head coach is joining Nick Saban’s coaching staff at Alabama.

After spending the latter part of last week in Tuscaloosa, former Louisville, Texas and South Florida head coach Charlie Strong has agreed to join the Crimson Tide as a defensive analyst, according to Chris Low of ESPN. BamaOnLine reported last week this move was expected.

Strong was initially tied to an analyst role at Florida, returning to a place he knows well to work under third-year head coach Dan Mullen. But he ultimately chose Saban and Alabama.

Strong got his start at Florida as a graduate assistant in 1983 and made a name for himself as the Gators defensive coordinator from 2003-09 where he helped Florida win two national titles in 2006 and 2008. His Gator defenses played their best in national championship games, holding Ohio State to 82 yards in 2006 and limiting Oklahoma to only 14 points in 2008.

Before the 2010 season, Strong was hired as the head coach at Louisville. He compiled a 37-15 record leading the Cardinals, including a Sugar Bowl victory, in four seasons and helped the team to two Big East Conference championships in 2011 and 2012. After two years of producing double-digit wins, Strong was courted by Texas and left Louisville for Austin, Texas.

As the head coach of the Longhorns, Strong never won more than six games in his three years, and because of that, he was fired before the 2016 season ended and landed at South Florida. His tenure in Tampa started off strong with a 10-2 record in his first year, but the Bulls’ win totals dropped by three each of the next two seasons. He was fired after the 2019 season.

Strong is the latest former head coaches to join Saban’s staff. Current assistants or staffers that were once head coaches include Steve Sarkisian (Washington, USC), Kyle Flood (Rutgers), Butch Jones (Tennessee), Mike Stoops (Arizona) and Major Applewhite (Houston).

Sources: Charlie Strong joins Nick Saban's staff at Alabama (ESPN)
quote:

Charlie Strong is the latest former head coach to join Nick Saban at Alabama.

Strong, who has had head-coaching stops at Louisville, Texas and South Florida, has agreed to a deal to become a defensive analyst at Alabama under Saban, sources told ESPN. Several other SEC schools had expressed interest in hiring Strong in a coordinator and/or analyst role since his ouster at South Florida following the 2019 season.

Florida coach Dan Mullen had also talked with Strong about filling a defensive analyst's role. Strong was the defensive coordinator at Florida under Urban Meyer when the Gators won national championships in 2006 and 2008.

Strong, 59, visited with Saban last week on Alabama's campus. The hiring of Strong continues a trend for Saban at Alabama of bringing in former head coaches either in assistant roles or analyst roles. Among them: Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, Mike Locksley, Mike Stoops, Kyle Flood, Major Applewhite and Butch Jones. Sarkisian is currently the Tide's offensive coordinator.

Strong most recently was the head coach at South Florida, where he went 21-16 in three seasons. He was fired after the Bulls went 4-8 this past season. Previously, he was at Texas and was fired after going 16-21 in three seasons. Strong's first head-coaching job was at Louisville, where he led the Cardinals to a 37-15 record in four seasons. He won at least 11 games each of his last two seasons at Louisville, including a win over Florida in the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2012 season.

Strong began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Florida in 1983 and has worked for some of the biggest names in college football. He adds Saban to a list that already includes Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier and Meyer.

Latest news, updates during Colorado Buffaloes' coaching search (BuffStampede)
quote:

Refresh this page for updates as Athletic Director Rick George and Associate Athletic Director Lance Carl continue their search for Colorado's next head football coach...

Thu. 8:56 PM: Predictably, Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun was not in the mood to answer questions from media about CU's head coaching vacancy and his prior interview with Buffs brass following the Falcons' spring practice on Thursday evening:

Here's the text of Troy Calhoun's interaction with media on Thurs related to the CU job search: https://t.co/R9jA0dRWVc
9:56 PM - Feb 20, 2020

Thu. 6:33 PM: With two Senior Days on tap - for CU men's basketball on Saturday and the women's basketball squad on Sunday - BuffStampede.com has learned interviews for Rick George and Lance Carl will likely resume on Monday.

Thu. 5:59 PM: While it appeared Steve Sarkisian to Boulder was a very strong possibility earlier on Thursday, with Sarkisian now set to stay at Alabama, the Buffaloes' coaching search is likely to be extended in order to explore more candidates. BuffStampede.com learned this is the most likely path following the Sarkisian news, instead of offering the job to someone that has already interviewed, and TheDNVR.com's Ryan Koenigsberg also tweeted that is the plan:
quote:

Ryan Koenigsberg @RyanKoenigsberg
After having narrowed things down in the last couple of days, Colorado is now planning to explore additional candidates in their coaching search, per source.
6:35 PM - Feb 20, 2020

Thu. 2:26 PM: A day after interviewing for Colorado's open head coaching position, Steve Sarkisian has reportedly decided to stay in Tuscaloosa.

BamaOnline, the Alabama affiliate on the 247Sports network, has confirmed a report by ESPN's Chris Low that Sarkisian informed Alabama head coach Nick Saban he plans to stay on as the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator. According to Low's report, Sarkisian is expected "to get a raise making him one of college football's highest paid assistants."

Colorado's search for Mel Tucker's replacement is now in its ninth day. Troy Calhoun, Darrin Chiaverini, Eric Bieniemy and Bret Bielema have been other rumored candidates for the Buffaloes' coaching vacancy, however, Athletic Director Rick George and Associated Athletic Director Lance Carl have been tight-lipped throughout their search. They are not using the aid of a search committee.

Thu. 1:41 PM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger provided the following report on the Inside the Herd message board:

I have confirmed the final interviews in CU's search for a new coach were concluded on Wednesday. It sounds like Rick George and Lance Carl are in the process of finalizing a deal, but an exact timeline of when an announcement might be made is unknown at this point. Right now I would be surprised if an announcement came out today.

Thursday (Feb. 20) 11:12 AM: Now former Colorado offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson has been officially announced as an addition to Michigan State's staff. Johnson is the fifth confirmed member of Tucker’s coaching staff, joining Chris Kapilovic, Courtney Hawkins, Ron Burton and Mike Tressel.

Wed. 10:14 PM: With Steve Sarkisian drawing most of the buzz regarding the Buffs' opening on Wednesday afternoon and evening, Altitude's Vic Lombardi claims Troy Calhoun "is the frontrunner":

Vic Lombardi @VicLombardi
Sources telling me Troy Calhoun is the front runner to become the new head coach of the @CUBuffsFootball. His job if he wants it.

Wed. 3:35 PM: BamaOnLine.com, the Alabama affiliate on the 247Sports network, confirmed BuffStampede.com's report that Steve Sarkisian is an interviewee in CU's search for a new head coach.

Wed. 1:51 PM: BuffStampede.com has released its Coaching Hot Board 3.0.

Wed. 12:00 PM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger is hearing that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is interviewing for CU's opening today. He spent seven seasons as a head coach at both Washington and USC, as well as plenty of years as an assistant at USC before that. Sarkisian is a charismatic, well respected coach. And like Mel Tucker before him, he has learned under Nick Saban. Sarkisian spent three seasons on Saban's staff with a two-year stint as offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons mixed in, as well, since losing his job at USC due to well-documented personal issues. He re-joined Alabama's staff last month, turning down an offer to join the Arizona Cardinals as an offensive coordinator in the NFL.

Wed. 9:37 AM: Fox Sports Radio's Doug Gottlieb has joined the rumor mill surrounding CU's opening by tweeting the following:

quote:

Doug Gottlieb @GottliebShow
#CUBuffs real candidate list I’ve been told -, Jay Hill, Willie Fritz, Bielema, Sark, Skip Holtz, Alex Grinch, Darren Chiaverini, Bieniemy
10:37 AM - Feb 19, 2020

Tuesday 1:45 PM: BuffStampede.com Publisher Adam Munsterteiger provided the following report on the Inside the Herd message board:

To fall in line with what I have already reported, interviews for CU’s head football coaching opening have continued today and will likely conclude by the end of Thursday. Situations like this are obviously fluid but I would be surprised if an announcement was not made before the end of this coming weekend. The contract for the next head coach is expected to have a massive buyout for the first few years, so CU football is not in this position again anytime soon. The salary pool for the assistant coaches is also expected to be increased, assuming Rick George gets the support he needs from the Board of Regents.

Haha, I don't want him, but if we're not promoting internally, who would we want and who could we get?

ETA: Joe Brady?

Not gonna lie - I don't feel good about Sark interviewing there. This feels like a perfect match for him to come back to and from scanning their boards they would be ECSTATIC with the hire.

Yeah, when I saw his name on a list of potential hires, I didn't have a warm fuzzy. I was hoping CU would hire Eric Bieniemy as I'd heard he was their first choice...but he may be in line for a HC job in the NFL in the near future...

That's because Sark is the most high profile name being mentioned and he's from the West coast.

I've been digging around and from what I've seen so far, it appears that Sark will stay at Bama and that Colorado might've offerred Troy Calhoun.

quote:

@RyanKoenigsberg
I'll also say I'm not nearly as down on Troy Calhoun as it seems a lot of CU fans are. He has a bit of a Tad Boyle vibe to him, is widely regarded as a great football mind and, in my opinion, has done an admirable job recruiting to Air Force. CU could do much worse.

I think Sark is better off at Bama. Staying at Bama allows Sark to improve his resume for a better job than the Colorado job.

Depending on what info is out there, Colorado had an offer out allegedly to either Calhoun, Sark, or Bielema.

Sark interviewed, then he pulls his name out of their coaching search.

Now Colorado is stepping back and exploring more options per FootballScoop.

Makes you wonder if Sark had the offer?

If it’s just about money , you think they would try to pony up and reach out to Sark with a counter offer ?

Bama also lost quality control coach Joe Houston to New England as assistant special teams coordinator.

He was the "kicking whisperer" Bama hired last offseason.
