This one stings. I remember listening to Finebaum during the Shula years when Cecil would call in. He was literally providing a communication channel to fans about the inside state of the program, sending signals about what information to trust, and ultimately providing hope to everyone. It was great entertainment where you had to read everything between the lines.

Great memories.

He was truly "the guy" that all of us trusted - and it stayed that way through 3 huge shifts in how we got our information about the team. Print/Radio/TV Era, Internet Sites Era, Social Media Era.

Didn't matter - Cecil dominated them all, and he never changed who he was or how he did it.

For years, he was the only reason I subscribed to the T News.

He was only 62.

Any word on what he had, other than the pneumonia?

Oh, and I'll at least foster Slim Charles, if no one can take him.

Cecil was one of the great ones and also one of the last great sports journalists. He had a way with words and he didn’t sugarcoat things either when it came to UA sports. RIP Cecil and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

This is what he wrote when Luke Ratliff passed away. Holy shite that last line.

Yep. If you recall that student that died trying to save someone drowning maybe 7 or 8 years ago, Cecil wrote a gut wrenching column in tribute to him. I think he was on the swim or track team?

You know you were an excellent journalist when, as a beat writer for college football, your death is the #2 trending topic in the nation.

Wow, I’m devastated. I worked a short time at The Tuscaloosa News after graduation and my first reaction after getting the gig was “When can I meet Cecil Hurt?”. Unfortunately we never crossed paths. What’s funny though, every week my family would ask me what’s Cecil saying about the team it took a life of it’s on and they always associated my job with Cecil. They aren’t big sports media people but they knew what he meant to the Bama community. I’m keeping his family, friends and fellow fans in my prayers. RIP.

The highest professional compliment I can give @CecilHurt is that he was a writer that other writers always read. When something was happening with Alabama football you didn't have the full story until you read what Cecil wrote about it.

Cecil was the messenger for Alabama athletics. His column was as straight, and insightful as ANY sports writer in the country over the last 40 years!
Man! I'm gonna miss him, as will so many other Tide fans will!

I'd buy a coffee table book of nothing but Cecil's 500 best tweets since he got on twitter 10 or so years ago.

So heartbroken to hear this. Cecil was one of the best in the business, covering Alabama or otherwise. Prayers for his family and friends.

The tweets from across the nation right now are really eye opening. All the top ESPN personalities and celebrities are paying tribute, and so are normal everyday fans who he interacted with and touched.

In an age of such negativity and outrage it is a fitting reminder of what really matters.

Agreed - the "important" people all truly liked and respected him and the "unimportant" people who he ventured across over 30+ years all truly liked him, respected him and admired him.

There are not many humans who can make that claim. That is the sign of a life well lived.
