I love Cecil but he seems to have made a big mistake with this article. Says the excitement from the fanbase can be attributed to 3 things and proceeds to only name 2. A few years ago he wrote an article encouraging fans to come out and support the players for senior night. He acknowledged it had been a disappointing season and how Wednesday night is still a church night for a lot of people. The problem? The game was on Tuesday.
Cecil probably edits his own articles because the paper is too broke to have an editor.

Any other former members of Rejection Row in here?

We had some really good teams that had absolutely no business losing a game up there find a way to lose.
I'm making myself nervous running through those beatings in my mind.

I was getting ready to link the article myself!
"There is a stronger, larger group of Alabama basketball fans than people realize. There are a core group of supporters who date back to the C.M. Newton days exists primarily in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham."
Although we're getting pretty old, there is a bunch of us still kicking, and we produced a helluva crowd/atmosphere for those good Bama teams. What Coach Oats has begun to put on the floor will quickly start a new wave of fan interest and participation, and will grow as long as the quality of his "product" continues to improve.
I'd love to see us get back to how things were before because the younger folks haven't enjoyed times like those around the basketball program.
That'd be me. I wanted to break shite when we lost that tourney game to undefeated Indiana.

And the losses to:
Providence with Pitino and Donovan
Purdue with the Big Dawg (I think that was what he was called)
Loyola Marymount and the Hank Gathers story
But that was tremendous fun compared to recent seasons.

Remember every one of them. The Providence one hurt my soul. That was and still is my favorite Bama team.

For what it's worth, Bobby Knight came into Alabama's locker room after the game, and told them that Alabama was the best team they'd played all year. That included a Michigan team they'd beaten earlier, and would go on to beat again in the NCAA finals. I thought that was a helluva compliment coming from a coach who didn't pass out many of'em!

They upset a great Minnesota team to get there, and I flew up for the semis and finals. The other teams were North Carolina (George Karl), Virginia Tech (Allan Bristow) and Notre Dame (Adrian Dantley and John Shumate). We lost the semis by 1 point to Vir. Tech, then got beat pretty badly by North Carolina.

Great memories of some damn good Alabama basketball teams.
PS- I even vaguely remember being in Montgomery at the Cow Palace with my folks to see Alabama become the first team to ever score 100 points on Kentucky! Johnny Dee's Rocket Eight Alabama team destroyed a top ranked Adoloph Rupp led Kentucky team (101-77). I remember very late in the game, Coach Rupp put his head down in the towel he was holding and just stayed that way for a long time.
Alright, I'm done!

Same here but I keep doing it. So much so that I just bought tickets to game tonight and I'm driving up from Huntsville. I'm sure after going 0-fer on 3's last game they will shoot 90% tonight or some other weird shite will happen.

You saw the Rocket 8? Dang, Im impressed. I was in school in the early days of CM. His first recruiting class included some kids from KY that UK didnt want Holland & Lynch. We had a home tournament called the Alabama Classic.
Very few fans were there, but some guy had a big sign he was holding up that said the Ala classic. He had CMs record on the sign--which wasnt very good at the time. Wimp stood there and just glared at the guy--like he would do the refs. The black athletes from Bham and around the state turned it all around for CM. I always thought Charles Cleveland was the best athlete I ever saw at Alabama. However, I will say this, I think some day we will look back and say Kira Lewis was one of the best bball players ever at Alabama.

In later years I played a lot of YMCA, Independent League and Church League basketball with a guy who played on that team, Jack Kubiszyn. He also played major league baseball in the Cleveland Indian organization. They were a helluva team, but because of the segregation policy in the state back then, they weren't allowed to go to the NCAA or NIT tournaments.

Oh, by the way, Charles Cleveland WAS the best athlete to ever come to the U of A! I watched him play basketball, football and baseball when he lived in Centerville, Ala. up until he graduated from Alabama. He got drafted by the worst possible team that he could have, the Phil. 76ers. They had 6-7 no-cut contracts at the time and wouldn't release him until all the other team rosters had been turned in to the NBA office. Things went south for him from that point on...sad deal.

CM Newton really had it going on at Bama and in a hurry. With coach Bryant's insistence, CM brought the first African American sports athlete to campus in Wendell Hudson. From there it didn't take long to start loading up on the very best teams Bama ever enjoyed.
It was the best gig CM Newton had, just never got why it was over much too soon.

I remember sitting up and behind the Bama bench at The Garden in their first game, when about 10 minutes before tipoff, I looked down and saw Coach Bryant and his entourage all walking to their seats behind the bench. Even in the middle of the arena in NYC, Coach Bryant's entrance caused the crowd around them to stop what they were doing and applaud him.
By the way, there are a TON of Bama alumni in NYC. Outside of Notre Dame, Alabama was the crowd favorite.
