Best D strategy against OK

The best defensive strategy we can use against the OK offense and Murray is to only allow them to play only half the game. Run Damien, run Josh, run Najee and burn half of each quarter with ball control. In addition it protects Tua's health and doesn't burn out the defense. Oh yeah, forgot let Jalen run for 50 yards too.

Moses needs to spy and we need to rotate rushers as often as possible.

We need to get pressure from up the middle with Q. Mix our blitzes/coverages... use 32 as a spy. Keep safeties deep to prevent getting beat over the top. We can’t allow a 10 yard pass to turn into a TD.

Just don't leave their WRs running wide open with no one within 30 feet of them like the Big 12 defenses they face on a weekly basis.
Army shut them down.
Army shut them down.

Army gave up 8.9 yds per play. They absolutely did not shut them down.

Need to make Murray make decisions quick decisions and have to get rid of the ball quickly . Can’t let him sit there while we “mush rush”

In some ways that could actually work in their favor because they give up 4x the yards through the air then they do on the ground. In a best case scenario we could beat them either way. There is just less room for error in playing them that way.

When they do get going, got to hold them to FGs also

Army didn’t. They just held onto the ball for most of the game. It was kind of like how like our Citadel game went in the first half.

I realize as fans we hate this, but the reality is that unless we dedicate a spy on every play, mush rush is the only viable way to play coverage without sacrificing a defender to just shadow murray.

You can blitz with tight coverage and make the throws short and tackle if they are completed. Lot of ways to play defense. Going to have to mix it up regardless but Texas rushed 3 with only 1 trying to get pressure as the other two “contained” the edge . Murray killed em every time

Big Q going to have to show out

That is a recipe for getting burned on the back end and by the players covered by backers repeatedly though. Aggressive blitzing against a player like Murray has to be situational or that offense will feast on the weaker links in coverage.

Pressure up the middle. Quinn em will ha e to have the game of his life. DE have to stay outside for contain. You know Oklahoma will force our LB to have to cover to keep them from rushing the QB. Bama will have to push the pocket into his lap because if they’re getting upfield Murray will find a lane and burn us. Murray is a very accurate passer and will eat us up in zone. Hopefully Tosh can come up with something to keep him confused mixing coverages. Oklahoma is a very good run team as well.

Backers shouldn’t be covering . They blitz . We will be in nickel and dime mostly . Not saying send the house every play but got to disrupt Murray and WRs timing and routes . We let them run free and try to just cover it could be a long day

Yep soft zones won’t work . Hell UGA was torching us first half with that strategy of just keep throws in front of us.

You can't blitz backers every down. Fundamentally this will be a mush rush with outside pressure game whether we like it or not. The only way we get pressure right now is through blitzing or Quinnen and that is not sustainable as a means of getting Murray off his game. He already throws a ton outside of the pocket, just getting him to move around isn't enough and to get the kind of pressure you are talking means sacrificing the integrity of the coverage.

Slow the game down. Army did it very successfully. Burn the play clock down under 5 every play. Use the full playbook, we don’t have to run every play, just use the clock up. Tua will have to take what he’s given even if that means the check down every play. Don’t get impatient or greedy.
On D, we CANNOT lose Calcaterra and the backs in the scrum. They use them to destroy your defense and frustrate them. Otherwise, just keep everything in front of you and contain Murray. Let’s see if he gets frustrated.

Carter can spy occasionally as well
Rotate blitzing Carter Moses Mack and the safety’s. Maybe let Jennings in on some spy action. Miller needs to have a big game as well. I believe Q will do bad things to that line.
If we sit on Murray one time it will hurt him.

I agree. Pointed that out in my post . Maybe we can get some pressure with 4 sometimes but going to have to mix it up . Sometimes drop 8, sometimes send 6 , 5. Can’t just mush rush whole game is my point
