Hopefully he’s adding a running game.

That will depend on the OL.

We had a year of non-functional OL play (2021) followed by a year of above average OL play (2022).

On paper 2023 could be getting back to elite OL play.

LT- Latham (elite)
LG-Proctor/Ferguson/Dalcourt (huge upside)
C-McLaughlin (VG and experienced)
RG-Booker (elite)
RT- Pritchett/Proctor (huge upside)

I’m not saying it’s the 2020 unit, but there is a ton to work with and incredible upside at almost every position.

I want WR's that can turn and burn after the catch.

Actually it has been Latham at right tackle and Pritchett at left tackle.

I’d argue we had a year where it was absolutely disgraceful a team with such talent was that bad in 2021. It was followed up with a firmly mediocre to below average 2022.

They never could consistently get run plays blocked. Their pass protection improved dramatically but was aided by Young’s awareness and escapability. The protection was still probably only mediocre if not for a genuinely gifted quarterback.

Agree.

Disagree. There were entire games where the OL gave Bryce 7-10 seconds to slow roll out and either the routes were bad or the receivers couldn’t separate against drop coverage at a range where he could actually push the ball to.

That’s not on the OL.

So in summary I’d say the OL outside of maybe one guy was elite at pass pro and mediocre at best run blocking.

I look at the 2023 OL and think Booker is an NFL mauler, see Latham adding strength as another potential 1st rd LT, you have the senior C who can steady the line and see about 4-5 guys who could be NFL guys fighting it out for the remaining guard and tackle jobs.

Add in what looks like one of the best OL coaches to pass through Tuscaloosa under Saban and pair him with an OC who wants to run power and there is every reason to be optimistic about this group IMO.

Is Deep Running Back Room Capable of Bringing Back Smash-Mouth Alabama Football? (SI)

The Crimson Tide has four viable options in the backfield. Can it return to its old ways in 2023-24?

When’s the last time Saban seemed this optimistic about the OL group in spring? My memory sucks, but I was caught off guard with what he said after the first scrimmage.

Hard to be elite when Chris Owens was doing his best matador impression every third play or so

2021 had a lot more peaks than 2022 imo

-Kicked the shite out of Miami in the opener after losing all that talent

-Destroyed an Ole Miss team that ended up Top-10

-Beat State by 40 in Starkville

-Blew out Tennessee who was just starting to find their stride with Hooker

-Blew out unbeaten Georgia in Atlanta

-Played the most basic gameplan ever and beat unbeaten Cincy by 21

I can't remember many times that we looked like a playoff squad last year

It's been a long time since I saw our receivers run such predictable and unimaginative route trees on any given play. They were good enough to get open, they just lacked the right scheme to get them open.

It was infuriating. I wanted to break a lot of things last year watching our offense just stand there with no pre-snap motion, wide receivers running the same predictable routes over and over, opposing defenses looking completely comfortable and ready at all times, and me just praying Bryce Young or Jamyr Gibbs would do something individually spectacular to save our asses.

I know a lot of experts say BoB is a good offensive coordinator but I think he sucked arse for us. Maybe it will work for him in the NFL this time, but I doubt it (and now I feel bad for Mac Jones).

I want to see how Richard Young looks when gets on campus. That dude is talented. He's going to be behind the eight ball as it relates to being in the program but there's a reason why Georgia, Oregon and Notre Dame recruited him.

Bill O'Brien and Pete Golding sucked arse last year. Both of them, especially Golding, wasted a talented, experienced defense. Hopefully starting new will be a good thing in 2023.

I dont know about above average OL play last year. We could not pick up a first down in third and short.

Last year the running game had issues. Gibbs was an electrifying open field runner but not a good short yardage back. McClellan and Williams were both coming off ACL injuries in 2021. They really weren't close to full strength until the last few weeks of the season. What we saw in the Auburn and Kansas State games was what we were hoping to see all year. Unfortunately by then it was too late to get in the playoff. I'm hopeful that the power running will be better in 2023. Jam Miller is going to be a factor if he stays healthy. I love the way he runs. Haynes also looks to be the real deal.

Agreed, but it was more trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shiite. When your LT is a Vandy transfer, you know there is a talent problem on the OL. Nothing against Steen, but he started from day 1. I just think we whiffed on a few OL prospects and it finally bit us.

2022 was the culmination of recruiting misses - either failed to win a signee or busts that did sign - from 2018-2021. Tons of misses at WR, OL, and DL over this time period. It just finally showed up on the field.

I'm no scout, and don't know how to grade out players, but there was some I formation in goal work and a lot of power runs. Bunch of throws to the TE between the 20's.

I'm just hoping we stop lining up in the shotgun on third/fourth and short.
