From a SI hodgepodge write up
quote:

We're hearing a lot of good things from multiple sources about new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. In part because he's young, Rees seems to have the ability to hold young talented players accountable, and in a way that they're ok with it. He's a very good teacher with "big picture" vision, but he has no tolerance for the same mistakes being made again and again.

Nick Saban doesn't throw around a lot of praise until it's earned, even during the spring, so this following line from Thursday night's press conference certainly got our attention:

"I like where we're headed and what we're doing. I think the scheme that we have to run the ball is well tied together. Hopefully between that and play-action passes we can make a few more explosive plays and not just rely on dropping back all the time. I think that would be very helpful."

Among the new players there's a lot of talk about junior college transfer Malik Benson at wide receiver.

Malik Benson will be WR1 by opening day. Stoked about his ability.

I thought his tape looked pretty good coming out of Hutchinson Community College, but after seeing him run routes at Pro Day, I'm really excited to get him, Brooks, and [insert super speedy guy] on the field together.

Also, I imagine people noticed this, but in regard to the video of Milroe's dime, Caleb Downs is on the field with the 1s.

Downs seems as much of a sure thing, can't miss recruit hit as I can remember. Anything can happen, but he seems destined for great things.

Jacorey is really, really good at catching downfield passes in tight spaces in the endzone.

Downs is a safe bet to start immediately. Talent and intangibles combined are incredible. Brooks is also one of my favorites. He’s made big touchdown catches against Auburn the last two years and that is enough to make him a fan favorite. Bond also looks like he is on pace to be a big time player. Speed and play making galore.

What are everyone’s thoughts on Freddie’s coaching of the defense line?

I thought he should have been let go right out the door with Pete Golding. Also baffled that Saban let Sal Sunseri leave to go be the D-line coach at Colorado, while keeping Roach who has been below average since he's been here.

Had a lot of bad luck on offense last year. Turnover year at WR with the QB1 unable to practice for most of the season. I don't think the WRs are as bad as it looked for large stretches of the season. The problem was that the best players were largely freshmen with not much experience in the offense or with the QB.

If the QB can just not be a liability and the OL is indeed taking a turn back towards physicality in the run game then I think the offense ought to be pretty good if Rees is not a chump.

Lots of caveats there I suppose but I think the odds are in our favor.

An OC that had two of them running to the same spot in the endzone or on the field a stupid amount of times didn't help.

I am sure Saban evaluated Roach. I don't think he's the best DL coach. He's okay I guess. But, Roach's recruiting is lights out.

The days of guys around here crying about Karl Dunbar not wanting to drive in the rain to recruit a bum that washed out at Florida after a year is always hilarious to me. One of the best coaches Saban has ever had on his staff.

James Smith was a massive pick up. He’s going to be in the rotation early this year IMO.

Speaking of Dunbar, LSU wants him or Bo Davis as their DL coach.
