Allen Barra, who wrote "The Last Coach," gave this account of Bryant's near-death story:

According to the SS Uruguay historic only 13 Sailors were killed. Pretty sure this is all made up.

I believe the 13 sailors being killed only referred to those killed in the collision with the tanker ship. That's how I read it anyway. The collision tore a 70 ft gash in the side of the USS Uruguay.

Due to the effects of the Depression and the critical labor situation, the Panama Pacific Line sold the ship to the U.S. Maritime Commission in 1937, which renamed her the URUGUAY and made her the flagship of the Good Neighbor Fleet, sailing from New York to Buenos Aires, Argentina and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1938, the Moore-McCormack Lines took over operation of the URUGUAY, sailing her to and from Brazil until 1942 when she became a United States Army Transport Ship (USAT). From 1942 until 1946, the URUGUAY ferried army troops to North Africa, Australia and Japan. In 1943 she was involved in a massive collision with the oil replenishment ship USS SALAMONIE off the coast of Bermuda. The Captain of the URUGUAY ordered the crew to abandon ship, however Lieutenant Paul "Bear" Bryant disobeyed the order and singlehandedly saved the URUGUAY from sinking by emptying the forward fuel tanks thereby shifting her ballast. Lieutenant Bryant was awarded the Navy medal for his actions and after the war went on to have a highly successful career as the football coach at the University of Alabama.

Alabama legend to join Sugar Bowl radio broadcast as sideline reporter (al.com)

Former Crimson Tide star Mark Ingram will be the sideline reporter on the Crimson Tide Radio Network. The New Orleans Saints running back, currently out with an injured knee, will join a cast of rotating sideline reporters filling the role vacated when Rashad Johnson took an assistant coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just before the season.

The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is the highest award given for non combat related bravery. I have been unable to find specific documentation of Paul W. Bryant receiving it. Records for WW2 can be incomplete or difficult to find, though. The historical source I have cited earlier seems consistent with what was stated in this thread. I did find a Paul M. Bryant who received it in WW2 for a different event.

I think chief is saying… There is no medal called “The Navy Medal.” Do you mean the Navy Medal of Honor?? “The Navy Cross?”

Playing in a bowl game wont count against your eligibility, right? Does this mean early enrollees can play tomorrow?

Early enrollees can't play, but folks already on the team who have played in the maximum four games without burning their redshirt (such as Ty Simpson) CAN play in the bowl game and still keep their redshirt.

I dunno if that's gonna be an ongoing rule, or if it was just implemented for this year.

It's my understanding that it's only for this year. They would have to make an additional change to make it permanent. Don't know if this was just a trial, or why they decided to implement it this year.

They want to avoid forfeits and improve competitiveness of games for teams hit with injuries, opt outs, and transfers.

I'd bet it sticks.

Everything Nick Saban and Chris Klieman Said in their Final Sugar Bowl Week Press Conference (SI)

The coaches of Alabama and Kansas State fielded questions from reporters one final time ahead of Saturday's game.

Nick Saban Offered Portal Players Chance to Play in Sugar Bowl (SI)

Alabama didn't have any players opt of it is bowl game, but had 10 scholarship players enter the portal after the season ended.

I always love listening to Saban, and that presser had some great nuggets.

But, it was also one of those where he just seemed worn out. Plus, hearing him thank the media at the end did make me chuckle. The man always keeps them guessing.
