Most OC's change formation strength with motion. If we are in Nickle, the nickle back follows the motion with the power shift and the SS & FS swap assignments.

Higher intellect OC's sometimes use motion and other time shift players. If we are in Nickle and there is a simple shift - no big deal and no strong side/weak side power shift. But at the last minute the RB moves from the strong side of the formation to the weak side there is no time for the nickle to motion across the formation. Nickle back rotates to SS / SS rotates to FS / FS rotates and is now the Nickle back.

That is how #2 at times ended up in a position he is not fully ready to handle and has to think too much.

Kiffin will do the same thing.

It appears Mullen also alters his OL/TE pulling and blocking schemes on speed/read-options & RPOs to screw with defenders' reads/reactions.

They ran the OT hooking the Lb and the Guard reaching on the DE to perfection. Even on normal handoffs we were “catching” their backs all day instead of attacking

havent read on this page but Greg Mc called out Bama fans for wanting to fire Golden. He said the schemes etc were good ones but we had poor execution. He called out 10 and 8 for poor play. Which I totally agree with. He could have called out 2 as well as 28

Greg is a good guy, and he was right for calling out some of our players but to give the coaches a pass for not having our guys prepped, not making any adjustments and not pulling some players in favor of guys like Moody and Branch is to miss the forest for the trees. He’s probably friends with some of our coaching staff and he’s wrong.

Yep. McElroy's flawed take on prior page here.

Execution was poor, but excusing Pete Golding for that is wrong.

10 and 8 are both individually coached by Golding (ILB coach).

So tell me more about how it's always everyone else fault..

If it is all on Pete Golding then the actual blame belongs to one Nick Saban for not fixing it after last season. ILBer play hasn't been worth a shite since JP left for K-ville.

Saban does seem oddly loyal to Pete. Maybe they have a special connection, like a father son sort of thing. Who knows, but Saban needs to make the right call for the program on this one. Pete has sucked and continues to suck.

I still think it's that Saban wants some stability rather than so much turnover, but if Golding ever proves he is a consistently good DC, he'll get a head coach offer too.

Pruitt seems to be the obvious answer. It will be at least a while till he gets another offer to be a head coach. Yes, his own program turned his staff in for recruiting violations, but a lot of people think that was to punt the guy without having to pay the buyout $$$$. Cut your nose to spite your face kind of thing. All I remember, though, is that there was an off campus paintball game, and off campus meal where there were coaches and recruits. If there isn't much more than this type of thing, I expect a slap on the wrist by the ncaa, and a negotiated settlement for UT and Pruitt. No show cause. It's a pretty good bet that if UA doesn't hire him, some other team like LSU will.

As soon as Pruitt is cleared, Pete should have 60 minutes to clear out his office. He can be an analyst if Saban wants him around so badly.

I think Golding is just a place holder for this exact scenario.

Good. Would be nice to have him as a DC for more than 2 years. Great defensive coach and recruiter.

How quickly we forget the defense the entire 2nd half of last season including a brilliant performance in the National Championship. At the end of the day, we faced a team with a bunch of talent, in a tough atmosphere, and a great offensive minded head coach with an entire offseason to prepare. You arent going to see a National Champion out of the SEC that shut down every opponent they faced anytime soon. Teams with the right playcallers and enough talent will have an opportunity to score. Georgia is the gold-standard for defense the past few years and they have routinely given up 30+ in big games

I see some people are already building up Pruitt to mythical proportions. Much like Bo Davis as DL coach.

I play a monthly card game with a few guys that are former NFL guys and now scout for their previous employer. They said the issue with our D they see and the same last year early in the season is poor execution, not playing up to par. They said Golding makes it to complicated. They said they see players out of position, hitting the wrong gap on a blitz, or just running into each other.
