It probably helps that Arnold had the best game of his career against Ole Miss.
Arnold got the misfortune of being opposite a top 15 pick in the draft. Nobody wants to throw at Koolaid because they’re scared about his playmaking ability and recognize he has elite closing speed with the ball in the air. So Arnold’s cover gets more targets as matter of fact. This means he has to play more cautious and take less risks. At least that seems to be his approach this year. He’s going to give up receptions to make tackles and be cautious about trying to play the ball and get toasted.

Coach Saban's post game press conference: Mississippi State
Saban (sorta?) explains why we line up in shotgun in short yardage situations:
quote:
“I watch games on TV, and everybody’s in the gun. Some people never get under center. When we’re in the gun, we clap. The players get in a rhythm. When you get under center, you have to go on voice command, and it was pretty loud out there on a couple of those occasions and I think we had some things that we wanted to do in short-yardage with the quarterback under, but I think we were a little apprehensive about using verbal cadence.
When I played, everybody was in an I-formation and the quarterback was under center. We watched a movie last night called The Program, which was like 30 years ago, which I played 30 years before that. And that’s the only formation there was in the whole game was the I-formation, all under center. So now the quarterback’s never under center. You’ve got to worry about getting the snap and you’ve got to worry about voice command.
But I do think there is a place in short-yardage situations where the quarterback being under center and not handing the ball off five yards deep in the backfield – but you can’t allow penetration like we did either. So it still comes down to executing. All them other plays that we ran in the game that made – how many yards did we have rushing? 193 – we were in the gun every time. Explain that to me.
You’ve asked about this two times in a row, so I know you’re a quarterback under center guy. I know that.”

The No. 12/11 Alabama football team overwhelmed Mississippi State by using a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive performance on its way to a 40-17 victory Saturday night in Davis Wade Stadium.
The Crimson Tide (4-1, 2-0 SEC) combined for 357 total yards of offense which included 164 yards through the air and 193 on the ground. Additionally, the defense had a strong outing as it accounted for three interceptions, eight tackles for loss and a touchdown while limiting the Bulldogs to just 261 yards of total offense in the win.
Quarterback Jalen Milroe had another solid night running the Tide offense, completing 10-of-12 passes for 169 yards on the night. He also rushed the ball 11 times for 69 yards and a pair of scores to account for 238 yards of total offense. Both Jase McClellan (15 rushes for 63 yards and a touchdown) and Roydell Williams (10 rushes for 44 yards) also produced in the ground game as the duo combined for 107 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown (4.3 yards per carry).
The Crimson Tide was led defensively on the night by Jihad Campbell's career-high 14 tackles to go along with an interception, tackle for loss and a half sack. Caleb Downs had 13 tackles which included five solo stops and a pick, while Trezman Marshall added nine tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Alabama picked up its first SEC road win of the season Saturday night in Starkville with a 40-17 drubbing over Mississippi State.
Did it result in a climb in the polls?
Alabama moved up one spot in both polls, No. 10 in the Coaches Poll and No. 11 in the AP Poll. There are currently seven SEC teams (Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and LSU) in the top-25.
Notre Dame is the only one-loss team ranked higher than Alabama in the AP Poll.

I’m told #Alabama WR Jermaine Burton’s extended absence last night wasn’t disciplinary or injury-related.
May have just been an opportunity to get other people opportunities or extra rest before next week’s clash at Texas A&M.

I saw Milroe read 1 to 2 and check it down to 3. I saw well placed intermediate throws. Albeit against MSU but it's something.

It is amazing how much better Milroe is when he gets a clean snap.
I watched the game again this morning and if Seth snaps a bad one Jalen kind of freaks out even if he has time to reset.
Good snaps seem to give Milroe confidence in the play call and he makes good decisions.

Something has to give with Seth. This can’t continue.

I noticed that last night. He looked so much better when he was getting good snaps. I think the bad ones throw his timing off and he's not experienced enough to recover from it.

Threw the ball 10 times - 2 or 3 times in the first half .. just along for the ride good or bad at this point
Defense looks great at times .. counter last night was basically a free 10 yards every time

Can we pass the ball well enough to punish TAMU?
TAMU is getting a lot of hype and I don't know why. The haters in the media are acting like TAMU didn't get blown out by Miami.

BAMA and road games the last couple of years have brought my grey hairs than they should. Bama never really seem composed in really hostile places. MSU was a nice test but it'll be nothing compared to ATM. IS Bama better than when they played UTx ( in TTown)? If not then not sure it matters if ATM is better. But I think Bama is, and in that same vein...so I ATM. Granted ATMs secondary is their weak spot but does Bama have the ability to capitalize on that in front of 102+k people? Fortunately I think Bama's run game has improved the most so far this year so if they can churn out yards, ATM can't protect their secondary

TAMU worries me. I was at the game in 2021. That place will be loud and Bama has not played well on the road against teams not named Mississippi State in several years. Their defense is legit.
That said, Milroe is good enough to beat them. Just can't make catastrophic throws.

It will be a hard fought game. TAMU is a very solid team, and Kyle Field is big and loud.
I'm just glad that Golding is not our DC, because if he still was, I would probably have already chalked this one up to a loss.
Cubelic was harping this morning about the epidemic of coaches not letting their players just simply play football. I'm glad we have someone like Steele calling things right now.
