(Maybe little known) tidbit - Hootie Ingram had all but hired high school legend Sammy Dunn in 1994 but Dunn backed out at the last minute. Wells then got the job. Worked out pretty good at that time. Haven’t gotten one right since then.

Owen Diodati’s Senior Day at Oregon

Posted on 5/16/23 at 5:17 pm to Bham Bammer
Coach Dunn was set to come but one hang up was assistant pay( only one got a salary while the other would be considered more of a volunteer, maybe $14-16k tops). My uncle was called by Sammy to be his pitching coach, but it was going to be a helluva pay cut. Biggest hang up was the health of his wife I believe.

That is correct.
On your other point, assistant salaries have come a long way and they still are not all that good. Generally speaking, there are obviously program outliers like the LSU’s of the world.

My uncle was a head baseball and head basketball coach in Cullman County with 25+ years experience. He would’ve made less than half his salary had the Dunn hire come to fruition.

Just got to keep him. Tanner Allen who played at MSU just put on Twitter a few weeks ago about how the plan for many (not all) players is to put up numbers as a freshman, jump in the portal , and see where the bidding ends up. Our hire needs to be a good one as well . Would have been nice to have Denton as well in our lineup but the trade off was a plus for us for sure

This is true, and hopefully a good hire will result in some NIL money coming available for us to use in acquiring some players in the offseason.

That would match us with the #2 seed regional winner in the Supers.
