Baseball Adds Anthony Papio to Crimson Tide Coaching Staff

Papio comes to Tuscaloosa after spending the last seven seasons at Maryland in various roles

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head baseball coach Rob Vaughn officially announced the hiring of Anthony Papio on Friday morning. Papio joins the Crimson Tide staff after spending the last seven seasons at Maryland working in various roles, including the last two as an assistant coach.

"I'm fired up to welcome Anthony to Tuscaloosa," said Vaughn. "Pap played for me at Maryland and has coached beside me the last seven years. He's the most competitive guy that I've ever met. He's a winner and he loves his players. I could not be more excited to have him and his fiancé, Ally, join us down here at Alabama."

As an assistant on the Tide coaching staff, Papio will work with hitters and the offense as a whole while also assisting with recruiting efforts. He comes to Tuscaloosa after spending the last seven seasons serving in three different roles at Maryland. Papio began his coaching career as a student assistant coach for the Terps in 2017 before being elevated to volunteer assistant from 2017-21. He most recently served as an assistant for the 2022-23 seasons.

In all three roles at Maryland, Papio worked with the outfielders and coordinated the running game while also assisting with hitters. Additionally, he coached first base for the Terps and compiled scouting reports. A total of 15 Terps were drafted during his tenure while 10 players earned All-America accolades and 25 were selected to All-Big Ten teams.

Papio helped Maryland see significant success during his time on the coaching staff, as the Terps compiled a 183-117 record and NCAA Tournament berths in 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023. A former outfielder at Maryland from 2012-16, Papio was involved in over 350 wins between his playing and coaching career, the most successful stretch in program history.

Under his guidance in 2023, Maryland finished as both regular season and tournament champions in the Big Ten while earning a spot in an NCAA Regional for a third consecutive season. His efforts with the hitters helped the Terps lead the Big Ten in nearly every major offensive statistic including average, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, runs and walks along with on-base and slugging percentage.

A big reason for the 2023 team's offensive success were All-Americans Nick Lorusso, Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger. Lorusso led the conference with 105 RBI and 26 home runs while slugging .765, a total that was second in the Big Ten. Shaw, who was named the 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year, ranked second behind Lorusso in homers (24) while also finishing second in the league for runs (80) and tying for third in RBI (69). Shliger rounded out the group, pacing the conference in doubles (24), runs (93), walks (69) and on-base percentage (.523) in 2023.

The trio moved atop the Maryland career leaderboards in three separate categories by season's end. Lorusso set the program mark for RBI, while Shaw finished as the Terps' career home run king and Shliger the career leader in runs scored.

Papio's first season as a full-time assistant saw the Terps compile a program-best 48-14 record, earning UM the No. 15 national seed and the right to host an NCAA Regional – both firsts for Maryland baseball. The 2022 offense led the conference in home runs, RBI, runs and walks to go with slugging and on-base percentage.

That 2022 campaign saw Chris Alleyne develop into the Big Ten Player of the Year under Papio's direction. Alleyne hit a school-record 24 home runs and added 79 RBI on the way to earning first team All-America honors. He was one of three All-America selections and 10 All-Big Ten honorees for Maryland in that season.

Papio's time in College Park began as a student-athlete from 2012-16, where he finished as the winningest player in Maryland baseball history. He helped the Terps compile 174 victories over five seasons while also playing in the most games in school history at 230. The first 'captain' during Vaughn's tenure at Maryland, Papio wore the number '3' from 2015-16. The number is assigned by Vaughn to the player that best represents the three pillars of his program.

A versatile outfielder, Papio split time in between center and right field in 2016, making 50 starts overall. He batted .261 with eight doubles, four homers and a team-best four triples while also serving as the team captain. His 2015 season featured 66 starts across Maryland's run to a second consecutive NCAA Super Regional. He starred during the postseason that year, earning a spot on the NCAA Los Angeles Regional All-Tournament Team thanks to his clutch hitting and superb defense.

As a sophomore, he started 43 games and helped the Terps advance to their first NCAA Regional since 1971. Papio redshirted his first year in College Park before appearing in 47 games with 39 starts as a freshman. He was also a contributor off the field during his career, earning Big Ten All-Academic honors twice and being named Maryland's 'Outstanding Sportsmanship Award' winner for the Big Ten.

A native of Olney, Md., Papio graduated with a degree in criminology and criminal justice in 2015 from Maryland. He is currently engaged to Ally Krikorian and is set to be married in October 2023.

Baseball Adds Mike Morrison to Coaching Staff

Morrison joins the Crimson Tide staff after spending the last two seasons at Maryland

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head baseball coach Rob Vaughn officially announced the hiring of Mike Morrison on Saturday morning. Morrison, who spent the last two seasons at Maryland, is the third addition to Vaughn's Crimson Tide coaching staff, joining associate head coach Jason Jackson and assistant coach Anthony Papio.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Mike Morrison and his family to Alabama," said Vaughn. "Mo won a national championship at Coastal Carolina and brings a wealth of knowledge to Tuscaloosa from both the pitching and recruiting standpoint. He's as relentless as it gets, and I couldn't be more excited to have Mike, his wife, Jordan, and their son, Miles, join the Alabama Baseball Family."

Serving as both recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach, Morrison will focus primarily on the Crimson Tide's recruiting efforts while also supporting Vaughn in all aspects of on-field instruction. He arrived in Tuscaloosa after a two-year stint as the pitching coach at Maryland from 2022-23, helping the Terps to a combined 90 wins during that stretch. Prior to his time in College Park, he was the pitching coach at his alma mater, Coastal Carolina, in 2021 and served as the Chanticleers' director of player development and scouting during the 2020 campaign.

Morrison's guidance on the mound helped Maryland post a 42-21 record and earn an NCAA Regional bid in 2023. The Terps' pitching staff was led by Jason Savacool, who paced the Big Ten in wins (9) while ranking second in innings pitched (96.0) and fourth in strikeouts (95). The junior earned second team All-Big Ten honors and was joined by Nick Dean (third team) and Kyle McCoy (freshman) on the all-conference rosters.

In his first year in College Park, Morrison's pitching staff contributed in a big way to one of the best seasons in program history with Maryland recording a school-record 48 wins while claiming the Big Ten regular season title and earning an NCAA Regional host bid. His weekend rotation of Dean, Savacool and Ryan Ramsey excelled, with each of the three pitchers earning postseason honors.

Ramsey, who was selected in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, was named a second team All-American and first team All-Big Ten selection for his standout junior campaign. He finished with 11 wins, the second-most in Maryland single-season history, while limiting opposing hitters to a .193 mark that was the lowest on the '22 staff. He also tossed a perfect game in that 2022 campaign, one of only 36 in NCAA Division I history and just the 21st nine-inning perfect game in history up to that point.

Additionally in 2022, Savacool garnered All-America recognition from multiple outlets while also being tabbed to the All-Big Ten first team. He finished his sophomore season ranked in the top-five on Maryland's single-season lists for innings pitched, strikeouts and wins. Dean's year wrapped up with third team All-Big Ten honors.

Morrison's coaching career began at Coastal Carolina, where he was named the Director of Player Development and Scouting in 2020. He took over as pitching coach in 2021 before joining Vaughn's staff at Maryland.

He played collegiately at CCU from 2013-16 and was a key part of the Chanticleers' 2016 national championship team. Morrison was selected as a first team All-American by three separate outlets and named a team captain during his senior season. He finished his collegiate career with an 11-4 record and 15 saves to go with a 2.93 ERA. Morrison was then selected in the 27th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox and spent three seasons in professional baseball.

Morrison graduated in 2016 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies while minoring in communications at Coastal Carolina. He also earned a pair of master's degrees in business administration and education from Coastal when he returned from pro ball. A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Morrison grew up in Gilbert, S.C. He is married to the former Jordan Lindler and the couple has one son, Miles.

Jenny Sanders Named Director of Alabama Baseball Operations

Sanders will organize the Crimson Tide’s day-to-day operations

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head baseball coach Rob Vaughn officially announced Jenny Sanders as the program's new Director of Operations on Monday. Sanders, who worked directly with Alabama baseball the last two seasons, is entering her 14th year overall working in Alabama Athletics.

"After working alongside Jenny my first few days on the job, I knew without a doubt that she is someone who is instrumental to our program and is key to helping us operate at a high level," said Vaughn. "I am thrilled to hire Jenny as our Director of Baseball Operations. She has a great relationship with both the returning and new players and is an incredible asset to our program."

Sanders spent the 2022-23 seasons serving as the Crimson Tide's Director of Player Development. In that role, she assisted with all aspects of the program from operations to academics. Her two-year stint in that role was highlighted by her helping Andrew Pinckney earn SEC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the 2023 regular season.

Prior to her role working directly with Crimson Tide baseball, she served as an Academic Program Advisor for UA Athletics. In that position, she oversaw all facets of academics for the Alabama baseball, women's golf, softball and men's tennis teams, providing her student-athletes with comprehensive academic counseling to help them meet their academic goals. Included in Sanders' tasks were developing support plans for first-year and at-risk student-athletes, observing progress and maintaining up-to-date records, and monitoring the continuing eligibility of the student-athletes across her respective sports.

While in academics, Sanders also coordinated submissions of all NCAA and SEC awards along with scholarship opportunities. She helped her student-athletes earn a combined 20 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, including four academic All-American of the Year accolades. She helped softball's Kaylee Tow become the program's first ever Elite 90 winner in 2019 while also guiding Haylie McCleney to a Boyd McWhorter scholarship and the Top X award in 2015.

With the baseball program, Sanders helped the Tide set a program-high mark for combined grade-point average during the 2017-18 season. The future rosters then improved upon that number each year until her promotion to the baseball staff, finishing the 2021-22 season with a then-program-high GPA. During that stretch, she helped Alabama garner at least one academic all-district honoree across four consecutive seasons from 2020-23, including an Academic All-American in Owen Diodati in 2022. Prior to that time, the Crimson Tide baseball program had not been represented on an Academic All-District Team since 2011 and had not earned Academic All-America honors since 2007.

A member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A), Sanders graduated from The University of Alabama in 2009 with a Master's in Sport Management. She obtained her undergraduate degree from UA in psychology in 2008.
