How did Furtado look?
In the first inning he was amazing. Sat them down in order very efficiently. (Stunningly efficient I might add) He showed flashes of what I’m sure the staff saw in him when he transferred. The next inning he was somewhat erratic and had trouble finding the strike zone. It was the story of the night for the bullpen too - amazing at times, head scratching at times. Bama made some excellent defensive plays to get out of some dicey situations. (along with some timely base running errors by Troy).
I may be overcompensating for the dark cloud the former coach allowed to be cast over the program, but I do like the way JJ is handling the pitching rotation in the post Bo era. And the team seems to be playing with poise and confidence.

When you see Furtado's raw stuff it just makes you wonder why it hasn't worked better for him during his career.

From the TNews
quote:
Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne is confident Alabama baseball will be eligible for the postseason, he said Wednesday at the Regions Tradition celebrity pro am.
“We have full expectation we’ll be able to be part of the postseason," Byrne said. "Obviously as soon as we knew there was a challenge, we dealt with it immediately. So we anticipate being able to be full anticipation."

I’ll also add that Bama scored at least 2 runs last night that I’m willing to bet (
) would not have been scored and had extra base hits that would not have been had if the former 3rd base coach had been calling the shots.

This is just unbelievable. Back in my day, 85 was a good firm fastball. 90 was big league stuff. 93 was a closer's velocity. Now to play higher level D-1 you have to be sitting 92-93 plus.
And they still get rocked at times.

Ben Hess – "Progressing slow. There’s nothing new with the flexor strain. Isn't progressing as fast as we hoped."
Riley Quick "should be back this weekend (after missing Vanderbilt series). Playing it safe with some soreness."

Just for the sake of conversation - Who would guys like to see Bama hire as the next head BB coach?
I would love to see the interim title lifted from JJ. The players all really like and respect him. He genuinely cares about his players and he’s just a solid guy. Unless we win the final two series and host a regional - which is possible - then I can’t see UA keeping him because of his ties with Bo. IMO.
Will Coggin, is a young guy that’s been in some really successful SEC programs and has worked with some really good head coaches. This kid has a bright future.
Scott Berry, because why would you not want Scott Berry?

Cliff Godwin is my choice. Lots of SEC experience, has built a really strong program at East Carolina as a head coach, and he is still pretty young. I think him and Berry have a lot of similarities but Berry is 15 years older so I'll take Godwin.

I’d rather be hosting but….

That would probably be the best regional we could hope for.

But you also have to factor in that now they register the pitch speed from the radar gun right out of the hand instead of what it is at the plate (like it was in our day) which makes no sense to me. What the hitter sees at the plate is more representative of what the true speed of the pitch is.

How well would we have to finish to host a regional? Is it even a possibility?
Posted on 5/12/23 at 9:33 am to RollTide33
I’m thinking 6-0 or 5-1 down the stretch would put us in the conversation. I’m not sure 4-2 would do it. In spite of the SEC dominating the rankings and the RPI - I’m wondering how many SEC regional hosts the tournament will allow.
Posted on 5/12/23 at 10:13 am to Alabama_Fan
4-2 with a little run in Hoover might be enough. But I think that's probably the minimum.

My heart's been broken too many times to believe we will even make a regional. I know we are looking good right now and look solidly in the tournament but I have been fooled before. Here's to hoping we don't get swept both weekends!
