The one thing I can maybe give him a pass for is that I think/hope in a tournament game that he would do it. These non-con games where the team is fricking up he just let’s get out of hand.
I guess I’m just trying to find a silver lining for it. He was clearly pissed and decided to send a message that he’s not going to bail them out. I hope when the stakes are higher he will, even if that looks like putting in 5 different players.

The timeout thing isn’t about telling our guys to give more effort it’s about breaking up the other teams momentum and calming our guys down

When was the last time last time we won a big home game under Oats? Seems like all our big wins the last 3 seasons have happened away from Coleman or Birmingham

He doesn’t do it in the tournament. He screwed that up several years back and I think he gave the exact same answer at the press conference about not using a TO to say play harder. It’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen a coach convince themselves is right.

The Bethea thing I was just lost on. Mallette was an easy cover for Arizona all night and I love his effort, but he's a one trick pony.
Seeing TBB in person a few times now, he's just really weak and he gets absolutely pushed around in box out situations. I watched Dell Osoro drive him 5 feet under the basket on a free throw rebound, forget about Akawa, that's just a laughable match up.
Teams like Arizona make adjustments at halftime and you could see that they decided to open the second half by baiting us and leaving Sherrell open any time he came out top. They figured it was worth letting a 33% 3 point shooter have every open look and at the same time they gained a massive rebounding advantage while our 7 footer is 22 feet from the basket. The game effectively ended when Sherrell missed shots on 3 of the next 4 possessions. They rebounded and went down and scored each time . An immediate 9 point swing that was basically a trap that we walked straight into. It got ugly when Nate decided to let Allen run point forward while we were reeling, but the game effectively ended as soon as they made halftime adjustments

wow, arizona sure did come a long way for a practice game

Oats says you play these games to learn about your team well, you sure know what won't work. Sherrell and TBB jacking threes and Allen running point.
Don't know why we didn't see more Bethea the man can shoot and we went cold on a couple of occasions. I'd play him ahead of Mallette.

I missed most of the second half but the halftime guys on ESPN said AZ would dominate in the paint once their big with foul trouble came back. Were they right and did our shooting go cold?

It's not some great mystery as to why our shooting goes cold against well coached teams. When our strategy is "everyone on the team is expected to shoot open 3 pointers". As an opposing coach, you can basically turn that metric on its head by choosing who to leave open that least hurts you and possibly helps other areas. Based on our own strategy, an open 3 is an obligatory shot, no matter who the player. It's not the first time that has been done to us.
Last night they chose to open the 2nd half encouraging Sherrell to leave the paint and go to the wide open top of the key bait they had set. Sherrell isn't an elite rebounder, but he is a monster body in the post that forces opponents to commit a body to him. So they basically got 3 things they wanted, our Center chucking 3s, the entire paint area easy pickings for them to get defensive rebounds against smaller opposing players, and no worries about foul trouble fighting off Sherrell down low on box outs for their bigs.
At halftime the rebounding numbers were 24-19. At the 14 minute mark it was 38-22.

shooting went cold, rebounding disappeared, turnovers became regular, and for a while it seemed philon only let philon take shots if they got a shot off. at least thats the way i remember it.

15 turnovers to their single digit number.

And how many of those happened in the run where we were discombobulated but Oats refused to call TO because he didn’t want to just say “play harder.” I’m guessing 5-7 of them. Do better Oats, your team deserves it

Why the hell did Bethea only play two minutes when Holloway is hurt and Mallette wasn’t making shite .
Mallette - 3 points in 23min
Bethea - 4 points in 2min
Oats was bad last night.

Warning: beating a dead horse incoming.
The answer is 5. In the 28-6 Arizona run covering about 8 minutes of basketball with zero called TOs, we turned it over 5 times and missed 8 out of our 9 threes. That’s a pace of 25 TOs in a 40 minute game.
Wrightsell was the only one who made a 3 in that stretch (he’s always been a major run stopper for us…guy just has uber confidence in his shot and is money when you need a shot to fall). Of the 9 threes taken, 3 were by guards/wings (Trelly, Philon, Mallette) and 6 were by our front court (Sherell, TBB, Bristow). I’m not sure how we plan to win games by letting our front court shoot two thirds of our threes to open the 2nd half of games, and turning it over on a pace of 25 per game? But sure, no reason to call TO and adjust or settle the team…just “play harder”. (Just watched the press conference…totally unsatisfying…what a dumb answer to a question asking what’s the strategy around letting your guys play through a 28-6 run. Thank you to the reporter who asked the question. Please have the courage to keep asking and force Nate to recognize he’s the only coach that says these dumb answers to why not use a timeout.)

Way more satisfying than Oats’ press conference. At least Mora railed on the coaches along with the players. Oats took zero blame for the 28-6 run. His only halfhearted comment about coaching was about which players to play and even then, he took shots at the guys that “didn’t get the job done.” Blaming the players consistently while taking no ownership on one of the worst coached games of his entire Bama career is utter arrogance and majorly disappointing IMO.
He’s still the best basketball coach we’ve ever had and we’re super blessed to have him. But last night was sad, and more from the coach than the players despite him only blaming players

There's been times when you and I have gone at it like two tomcats, but bud when youre right you are right.
This man..coming off a really good game, hardly plays at all. Holloway struggles against teams like this and he's not 100% anyhow, and Mallette is,not shooting well. Play him.

zonas D does deserve alot of credit. that was probably the best ive seen from any team so far this year. that said i just cant go along with why many here are whining about our bigs taking those open threes. zonas gamble on that paid off some in the second half but lets not forget as of now both sherrell and bowen shoot better than 33% from 3. thats right around whats acceptable as its 50% from 2. them with bristow finished on 4 of 11, all of which were wide open looks. they did fine. bama lost by 20 because of all the TOs and offensive rebounds giving zona 30 extra possessions and that burries kid (a 30% three point shooter before the game) out shooting what seemed like the entire bama team in the second half.
