Pros:
-Great Defensive Coach
-Players play hard and don't give up on him
-Recruiting better out of state than any coach I remember. No, we aren't landing many as of yet, but we are being listed very high among recruits from places we've never really been able to recruit from.
-We are in most games that we play until the final few minutes and blowouts are pretty rare (except against UF)
-Teams seem to play very well in streaks which is something needed in the NCAA Tournament
Cons:
-Terrible Offensive Coach
-Pitiful Offensive Coach (deserves to be listed twice)
-Roster Management. Yes we got hit with unexpected transfers and players that decided to leave early, but even with the players that left we were still in need of 2 post players in last year's class with 1 guaranteed available scholarship.
-Teams seem to play bad in streaks which is something not needed when trying to make the NCAA Tournament or receive a quality seed.
-Post recruiting has been pretty bad. Yes the in-state big man talent has been completely non-existent during his tenure, but doesn't excuse him from finding someone serviceable down-low.
-Not a great program promoter.
Why we might should fire him now?
-We have in-state talent in the 2014 class we simply can't miss on due to a coaching change if Grant doesn't redeem himself next year.
Why we should hold off firing him?
-Grant finally has a couple quality big men coming in.
-Grant might just be the best coach available for us right now as there are not too many realistic options for us right now.
-Bruce Pearl won't be hired by anyone until at least 2014.
What can help Grant keep his job beyond next year?
-An offensive minded assistant to help him with his offense (or lack thereof).
-A true PG. Good lord, we need a distributor more than we need a post presence. Releford is a great undersized SG, but he has the court-vision of a horse with blinders on.
-He stumbles upon a book called "Basketball: Offense for Beginners".
My view:
Obviously I think we should hold on to him for another year. I'm really hoping our two committed posts can come right in and impress right away. Regardless we will have depth down-low for Grant to sub in and the continued improvement from our guards would set us up for a top 25ish worthy team. After next year we should know for sure whether or not Grant is worthy of the job. Besides I think overall it is in Bama's best interest to just wait and see what candidates they can pursue in 2014 (Bruce).

I can't imagine Grant not getting another year. Bama will be in the NIT and that will be "good enough", because of excuse x, y and z.
Any chance Saban can moonlight as bball coach until a good coach is available?
Bama basketball is depressing.

Since we hired Grant, I have not once said a negative word about him. It's been difficult, but the gradual progression from no bid, to NIT bid, to tournament bid had me hopeful that he was capable of progressively building the program into a winner.
Now, it's year four and we have no depth, no desire, and plenty of bad losses. Last night is the most embarrassing loss by Alabama since he's been here, and that says a lot when you look at some of the shite programs we've lost to.
He deserves another year, but he has to get this thing turned around. If we don't win an NCAA tournament game next year, he has to go.

Here's another Con:
Since he got here, Grant hasn't done shite to promote the program. Seats aren't just going to fill up and if Mark Gottfried was good at anything, it was getting out there and promoting the program. He would speak to alumni groups all the time. Grant hasn't done the first one. IMO, he's not sold on Alabama as much as we (hopefully) aren't sold on him.

In his defense, he does deserve better than Coleman. You can polish it up, but it's still an aging turd.

For better or worse, there's no way in hell he's getting fired this year or next really.

I agree he's not getting fired after this year, but another lackluster season next year and I think he's gone. Doesn't he just have 1 year left on his contract?
IMO this team is no better than his first team 4 years ago. We can make all the excuses we want, but this is a results-oriented business and for $2 mil/year we should be getting better results, period.

I look at all of the close wins we have had over the season and the game last night and can't help but think that had some of those close wins gone the other way, this wouldn't be much of a discussion.

If we have a great season next year, is all forgiven?

He has like 6 years left on his contract.

If we are winning close games with little offensive improvement like this year, I don't think all is forgiven but his seat is a little cooler. I think there needs to be obvious signs of improvement on the offensive side of the ball.

Fans are so fickle. Folks were raving about the man after the NIT run and even after last season. Even the best in the game had terrible games/seasons.

All I want to see is some progress especially on offense. If he could do that, then I'm all for keeping him. But we've actually gotten worse offensively every year under CAG. That has to be fixed or it's time to move on.

do you even watch the games. Do you see progress. I don't?

I don't think we should fire him yet, but next year has always been his make or break year in my mind and with the added post depth and continued improvement from our guard play, there just isn't any excuses for him not to get it done next year.

The folks that really pay close attention were questioning Grant's in game coaching and offensive philosophy at the beginning of last season. This isn't something new.

Does this really matter if all they are going to be allowed to do is pass the ball around for 25 seconds before taking an ill advised, contested shot?

Can't make chicken salad out of the isht that state produces. Offensive studs that dream about going to Bama.

If it didn't we wouldn't have won half of our games so far this season.
