If it takes 15+ minutes to make an argument whose conclusion is "Defense not bad", I can't help but assume the argument is going to be extremely contrived, or else you have no idea how to make a point.

I would read a succinct summary.

In any case, I can't agree that the defense wasn't bad. Soft = bad. giving up 180+ rushing yards = bad. Poor discipline = bad. Giving up plays in crucial situations = bad.

The more and more I think about this game, the more and more I understand why Saban looked dumbfounded on the sidelines and after the game. We dominated in just about every statistical category, only gave up 350 yards of total offense, yet surrendered 48 points. Even when you account for the two pick sixes, 350 yards shouldn't net you 34 points.

When you look at the stats, even taking into account the two picks, Alabama was the better team. We moved the ball up and down the field on Auburn and our defense did a decent job holding them to just 24 minutes time of possession and 350 yards. However, there were several crucial third down plays the defense allowed them to pick up that kept Auburn's drives alive - including some unbelievable throws from an otherwise mediocre Bo Nix.

I mean it's true. They were not great by any means, but they weren't bad. Absolutely played well enough for us to win with us scoring 45 points on offense, and them scoring 34 points on offense. And 12 of those points were from a kicker who was by all indications not even kicking inside of his range. He's missed those kicks all year.

As has been the case in the last 3 big games we've played, mistakes and unforced errors were the differences in the game.

And that's not taking anything away from the teams that beat us in those games-they made less mistakes and capitalized on our mistakes. They were better than us.

How many pick sixes had a saban coached Bama QB thrown before the Clemson game last year? I can't even think of any, besides maybe in 07.
We have thrown 3 in the past 3 big games! 5 total ints in those 3 games. 6 turnovers by the QB in those 3 games.

And in 2 of those games we could have overcome the turnovers, but false starts, stupid PFs, bad special teams play on top of those turnovers have just killed us.

We just have to get back to fundamentals. The margin for error is so small in these big games sometimes, and little mistakes can be the difference. And big mistakes can be killer.

Auburn had great field position for a lot of the game. We did really well on offense for the most part but the bad part is when we didn’t score we typically went. 3 and out and they got the ball around the 50

You have take in consideration all the penalty yards. Plus both pick sixes. Add both of those and it really adds up.

This is also very true.

While Waddle is an explosive PR/KR, you have to play conservative at times. Several of those kickoffs that Auburn had should have been fair caught. Instead, Waddle/Ruggs tried to make a play on every single one of them. All but two of them were advanced beyond the 20. Our offense seemed to start in a hole after just about every Auburn scoring drive.

Do you recall the drive where the cow college had 3rd down and at least 10 3 times on that same TD drive? Bama played 9 vs 11 with 8 and 35 being the two missing players on defense.

It’s the hidden yardage from penalties and the big return.

Bingo....the only two teams we played that were worth a shite kicked our azz because our defense couldn't get off the filed on 3rd down..ovah and ovah and ovah. The biggest problem is the same group of ILB return for 2020. Hell Nick is begging for McMillon to return for year 6 even though the guy never was able to get on the field his 1st 4 years (except for garbage time). Think about that. Hopefully he can find a grad transfer or Juco LBer.

Alabama's defense was absolutely bad against Auburn

- We gave up more yards per play than they had against any defense with a pulse all year

- We gave up a long TD drive immediately following the offense getting up the lead late in the game. Again, no ability to get off the field on CRUCIAL drives.

The ONLY reason Auburn didn't have more yards is because they ran less plays due to their good field position and 2 Pick 6s.

It's fair to say the defense didn't lose the game. It's ridiculous to say they weren't "bad".

Not watching

Sounds like a Big XII fan that hasn’t watched Bama since Saban has been HC. That’s the only way I see anything remotely close to validating “not bad”

I don't agree with the opinion in the videos. But, the creator of the videos does break down game footage schematically and isn't emotional in making his arguments.

We were terrible on third down all year and this game was no exception. We stone people on first and second down and it's like our kickers, you KNOW we are going to give it up on third.

It was atrocious. That inept offense score 30 plus points. That's all that really needs to be understood

I'm not emotional about it either - the stats are the stats

Auburn's Offensive YPP Per Game - From Worst to Best
1. Georgia (3.83)
2. LSU (4.16)
3. Florida (4.41)
4. Tulane (4.62)
5. Texas A&M (4.75)
6. Oregon (5.11)
7. Alabama (5.45)
8. Ole Miss (5.63)
9. Samford (6.40)

Auburn Offensive PPG from Worst to Best
1. Florida (13)
2. Georgia (14)
3. LSU (20)
3. Ole Miss (20)
5. Tulane (24)
6. Oregon (27)
7. Texas A&M (28)
8. Alabama (34)
9. Arkansas (51)
10. Samford (52)

Our defense clearly performed worse than : Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M and Tulane. We were relatively similar to Ole Miss, except Ole Miss bowed up and held Auburn out of the end zone (and Carlson missed a few kicks).

So yes, if your measuring stick is OLE MISS then our defense wasn't bad against Auburn.

As a man, I'd prefer, "What do you think about this?" I don't have any emotions about any of it. It's a football game.

But to answer your question, we held auburn to 354 total yards for the game. Their point total was due to incredible field position for much of the game and 2 pick 6s, neither of which is on the defense.

Without those 2 pick 6s, Bama wins 52-34 and no one is upset, even with auburn's field position luck and a bogus FG at the end of the half.

The fact that Auburn had incredible field position and two pick sixes (completely nullifying two offensive possessions) and STILL gained 354 yards means our defense was bad. In a game like this one which had big kick returns and points off turnovers, you have to look at YPP more than total yards. And as you can tell by SoG's post, our defense once again was below average.
