Amazing how Saban takes every change and makes Bama better. GOAT.
I would love to see us go get an elite OT who could be a star from day one. We solidify the OL and I fear for the rest of CFB in 2022.

Saban isn't absolutely correct in his reasoning but he's right in regards to the final outcome.
(Only) Bad players leave Bama is how it came across. There are good players that join Bama from other schools and likewise good players also leave Bama to join other schools.
The edge is in talented and experienced players joining Bama in positions of need of immediate help.

Syd,
what are you referring to ? There's nothing about my response even remotely close to debatable or wrong.
The Metchie remark wasn't me so ...

question, how good is this back from GT[Jahmyr Gibb}?
anyone seen this kid play? his numbers look fantastic and can anyone give a phonetic spelling of his 1st name.

He's apparently one of the best backs in the nation.

He is good, if we find some people to step up at WR and OL and a few other positions - this team could be absolutely terrifying next year.
Transfer portal season has been really good at trying to address those spots thus far.

Really, really, really good. The player he most resembles to me is Alvin Kamara. He is a legitimate threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball.
Gibbs had at least one play of 50+ yards in 6 straight games this season.
71 yard reception v. Pitt
77 yard TD reception v. Duke
71 yard TD rush v. UVA
61 yard rush v. VT
50 yard TD reception v. Miami
98 yard kick off return for TD v. Boston College
And keep in mind, this was for a terrible Georgia Tech team. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry when 1st contact was behind the LOS on 50% of his carries.

Just highlights and some PFF stuff. But if you told me he was the best skill position guy in the country not named Bryce Young, I wouldn't be too surprised

The transfer portal has essentially become free agency for college football, and the big dogs will almost always be the benefactors.
This was obvious from the outset. Talent already had far greater autonomy than in the NFL in terms of freedom of movement even with the previous transfer rules.
The NFL may be a capitalist enterprise on the exterior but they're not really a free market. Players can only enter their system through a draft. Free agency has several bounds that protect the franchises as much as the players. Salary caps prevent franchises with more revenue from hoarding talent in the free agency market.
College athletics is going the more free market direction and that is fine but in reality free markets don't have an equilibrium with a multitude of roughly equivalent competitors. In the real world free markets inevitably end up with a small handful of competitors who got early market share advantages then parlayed it - through acquisition and destruction of competitors - into market dominance.
That is what is happening in college athletics up and down the stream. Conferences are feasting on competitors who are losing in the revenue arms race. School are feasting on other schools who cannot afford the same opportunities to talent.
Success will replicate success and there will be a shrinking on who can even compete for championships and a harder barrier for entry into that elite club.
Sure, schools in this elite club will ebb and flow. Microsoft missed on smartphones in the aughts and they're not quite the company they were at that time. They're still one of the biggest companies in the world and get their wins in the marketplace.
Lucky for us, Alabama got Saban at just the right time when the cable television revenue revolution in college athletics kicked into high gear. I suspect that Alabama could take a step back but the system is so far along that we're just going to replicate success post-Saban. We're already firmly on the right side of the dividing line.
Sucks for everyone else.

Yeah I truly do not understand how anyone ever believed that the transfer portal combined with a one time waiver would have any result other than concentration of talent at the top even moreso than it had been before. The intent was to help out guys like Jamo who were good players sitting behind other good players. But as usual with these kind of rules the intent quickly becomes irrelevant. In previous years there's no way a kid like Gibbs or Burton transfers out of a situation where he's playing a lot and on the NFL's radar. Absolutely no way. They'd suck it up and hope they can impress at the combine instead of sitting out a year just to transfer. Now they get to move to a better situation as juniors and try to dominate for a year to solidify themselves as top ~50 type picks.

I agree. Just adding that transfer leniency also helps some 2nd-tier players & teams, such as Drew Sanders to Arkansas, Shane Lee to USC, Paul Tyson to Arizona St, Billingsley to Texas, Javon Baker to Kentucky, Marcus Banks to Miss St.

I'd argue Jamo and Burton have similar profiles but not exactly the same.
Neither were being utilized correctly at their first elite program. They would probably be a day 3 draft pick and hope their coaching in college prepared them to stay on an NFL roster.
Jamo was an outside receiver who was being asked to primarily slot with Olave and Wilson. With Smith-Njiba being a more natural slot receiver in their offense, he was likely going to relegated to rotating in when Olave and Wilson needed a breather. They throw a lot in that offense but at best he was going to be a 500 yard and handful of TDs receiver in 2021 at Ohio State.
Burton is a slot receiver who was being asked to play outside and rotate generously with other very talented receivers in an offense that uses 2 or 3 TE sets frequently. Furthermore, due to using heavier sets, most of the possession passing seems to go towards backs and tight ends rather than receivers. Burton is the type of receiver who wants to operate in space where his twitch and burst can be used to his advantage. Running fly, post, corner, and square-in from X or Z is not highlighting his abilities.
Good programs who misuse talent are going to lose talent to other good programs that can utilize that specific player's talent well. It is not complicated. We lost Drew Sanders for the very same reason. Our staff thought he was more of a OLB than ILB but opportunities for him were limited since a tackling machine at OLB isn't as important a pass rush in what Alabama runs now. Drew Sanders would've been a god-tier SOLB in the 2007-2014 teams.

This 247 article's opening bit really highlights the brass tacks:
Alabama lost 3 2020 recruiting cycle players, added 3 2020 recruiting cycle players right back through the portal. 2 of the transfers were direct positional replacements for the losses on the roster to the portal. The third replaces a void left at corner since Surtain left after 2020.
