TideWarrior...
Thanks for taking your time out to outline that. However, I have a question. If this is the case why did we have no room at the end of last signing day?

Because the 85 cap was the issue. You can only have 85 on the roster at any given time. If I remember correctly we only had what maybe 13 seniors on scholarship that left plus 3 leave early. So that only opened up 16 spots. At most we should have been only able to add 16 players but somewhere I assume a few juniors graduated and we had players dismissed from the team this spring. You know all the reasons rival fans complain about our oversigning.
The same reason we only had 22 enroll in both 2010 and 2011. But we were able to back count players into those spots the next year. The 85 is what also determines how many we can EE as well. The reason Hart almost did not play at UA because he wanted to be an EE.

That is where the second number of 85 comes in. We could only have 85 total. When Page failed his physical it dropped us below the 85 making room to bring in one more.

That's right Paige out allowed Bozeman to join the class.

Thinking the same but I also think he was a complete fatass when he got to OM
Also Tony Conner is MFING LEGIT
can see why staff was so hot after him right up to the end
Nkemdiche looks really raw and gets pushed back on his heels and skated a lot against the run, but to help him transition he shouldn't play strictly down which is all he's played

WRT the limits, my interpretation is different. For the 1st year under the 25 signing limit (2012), I think you're only able to look back to NLIs signed in 2011 to determine backcounting as opposed to mixing it with the 25 initial counter rule as you've done
2011 - signed 24 (Duron didn't sign)
2012 - signed 26
2013 - signed 24 (Hill counts against '12 and Bozeman didn't sign)
2014 - room for 26
And we tend to almost always be limited by the annual signing and/or initial counter limits as opposed to total scholarship limit (85).

but in 2011 Love and Carswell were backcounted since they were grayshirted in the 2010 class. If I remember correctly when a player signed a NLI in 2010 it still locked them in. It was in 2011 0r 2012 where when the NCAA decided that if a player signed a NLI but then grayshirted the NLI would become null and void. I might need to go look that up to confirm.
The main difference with the new rule was before they had to enroll to count against the 25 incoming class in 2012 they counted the moment they signed.
In the end it will not matter if we can sign 25 or 28 if we can not fit them in the 85 limit and the staff may want to save a spot or 2 for nest year.
As Saban says no one knows outside of him and his staff.

I'm saying for the purposes of instituting the SEC's 25 LOI rule, there was no 2010. No 2010, means there's no where to backcount Wilson and Carswell to. They effectively count like the 2011 signees who enrolled early.

Hahahahaha ha
Nkemdiche gets his 1st real taste of reality
Going in the locker room at half down 21 - 10 to VANDY
You made your bed young man
ETA: and he looked so very disappointed when the K missed a FG after he made the 1st down on 4th

Maybe I am misunderstanding here. In 2010 only 22 enrolled. 26 signed NLIs. Love and Wilson who ended up grayshirting and Belue and A Hill who did not qualify. The old rules were still in place. So only 22 actually counted against the 2010 class allowing 3 to back count into the class. The new SEC rules did not apply until the 2012 class.

I think the only people who know how many spots we have in this class is the staff and rightfully so. Having said that, a good number of people I trust completely (who have multiple inside sources throughout the athletic department) are saying we will take more than 25. Now I'm not sure if that means 26 or 28, but I believe we at least take 26. I've got a feeling, with no real info mind you, that our magic number is 27.
I certainly hope that is the case. With that number in play we could really load up with this class given who is left in play.

Agreed but I really wouldn't worry too much about the 85 limit. Every year I see people state that we won't sign but ~20 because of small senior class, etc. and every year we sign right around 25.

And Tim Watts said today that he feels we land Matt Elam.

Admittedly, I've done a poor job of explaining it.
The SEC's 25 NLI limit started with the 2012 class. I'm saying that, unlike determining backcounters for the 25 initial counter limit, you look at the 2011 class in a vacuum when determining backcounters for the 25 NLI lmit. If you look at Bama's press release on NSD '11, the class consists of 23 players ( LINK; Cyrus would make it 24 a few days later.
When calculating how many initial counters we could have for 2012, I agree that Love and Carswell as well as another player backcount to 2010. I just don't think we get the same benefit for the SEC 25 NLI limit.

No one but Saban knows. I read somewhere that Emmert calls once a year and Saban tells him we are at 85.
