A 20% difference for reaching the Final Four and 30% for the championship game is a pretty large difference between #1 and #2 seeds.

I think that has less to do with seeding and more to do with elite teams getting the 1 seed. If you think Bama is as good as the 1 seeds, then you can probably throw those stats out the window.

Butler came pretty close as a 5 seed in 2010, Duke beat them in the championship by 2 points.

It's kind of striking that 4s have done so much better than 5s getting to the Final 4 and 8s have outclassed 9s by a mile.

Yes the 9 is the worst seed to get imo.

I really just hope we get to the sweet 16, with a two seed you really should make it at least that far unless you just get a shite draw. Anything more than the sweet 16 would be gravy.

9s have a winning record against 8s though.

How do y'all define mid-major? Is it Power conferences and mid-major, or is it Power conferences, mid-majors and small conferences?

I've always done it the second way - where AAC, Mountain West, WCC, A-10 would be mid-major and Sun Belt, Horizon, SWAC, etc. would be small.

In basketball, its the power 6, not the power 5 as in football.
The 6th is, rightfully so, the Big East. Most every other conference that's in at least the FBS, like the AAC, would be mid major.
Anything FCS in football or less, I'd consider a small school in basketball

Last tournament (2019) all four 2 seeds got to the sweet 16 (Tennessee, Michigan State, Kentucky, Michigan) Tennessee and Michigan lost in the sweet 16. Kentucky Got to the elite 8 where they were beaten by 5 seed Auburn. Michigan State got to the final 4 and were beaten by 1 seed Duke.

If Haslametrics.com had a NET rating, this would be it: One part percentile for All-Play Percentage, one part percentile for efficiency margins, and two parts percentile for Record Quality. Here are those rankings as of today (3/3/2021):

If Illinois beats Ohio State Saturday that should cement us as the top 2 seed.

My gosh that's such a fantastic photo. It encapsulates so many things that make college sports so great.

I don’t know what I consider the modern Big East. It’s too good to be grouped as mid major. At the same time, since the football schools left the schools are too small to compare them to B1G or SEC schools.

The Big East is like a power conference of mid major programs - St. John’s, Villanova, Georgetown and UConn are the only Big East teams that seem like power programs on their own.

Here are the implications of the Missouri v Florida game:

If Missouri wins it would guarantee them no lower than a 7th place finish in the SEC. Which means the battle for the 8/9 matchup will be between MSU, UK, and UGA.

If Missouri loses it’ll be a very interesting Saturday.
