Our defensive transformation is the most shocking thing this year.

Yea I did not see this coming at all. I think we all agreed that we had a chance to be a solid defensive team with our length and added athleticism, but I had no inclination we'd be an elite defensive team. Not to mention how bad defensively we were the first couple of weeks.

I wouldn't really describe us as a particularly athletic team. I think that was a big issue early on before everyone got on the same page too. What sets us apart from a lot of teams is that we don't take any possessions off. We make some mistakes and individually players will have lapses in focus and intensity, but I can't remember the last time I thought we were playing lazy team defense. They just get after it for 40 minutes. Someone might beat us, but they're going to earn it.

Not only that we got to this defensive level this year to start with, but that we've managed to maintain it for a stretch of 9 games without Bruner.

We have been defending the paint for half the season with only one player taller than 6'8", and the one is Alex Reese, not exactly known for his defensive prowess.

Bruce Pearl tweeted "Boom!" and that idiot Ramone on Twitter was telling people that he knew what it was all about and that it had nothing to do with Gus/UCF. Basically implying that he's an insider and it's some big recruiting news.

Then Bruce just started his press conference by saying "I'd like to start the press conference with a Boom to congratulate my friend Gus Malzahn on his new job at UCF".

That Ramone guy is such a try hard idiot

I have not really paid much attention but Bruce and Gus don't strike me as two guys that would love to get together and hang out.

Compared to last year we are, though. Guys like Ellis, Bruner and Gary and even Rojas replaced Bolden, Galin and Davis.

But this is the key. We play hard all the time on defense, we rarely have lazy transitions and we play pretty damn good help defense.

Like you said, teams don't get a whole lot of easy possessions against us. You have to finish at the rim against someone or make a contested outside shot.

This team was a bit of a mess on both ends back in December. I don't know what clicked for them, but it certainly did. Maybe Oats just finally figured out the right substitution patterns and lineups. It did seem like in December he was just throwing different lineups out there to see how they'd do.

The amazing thing about this team is they didn't fold after the Bruner and Jones injuries. Most teams would have, especially most of the recent Bama teams. And granted it's a bad UGA team, but they came out the game after the Gary injury and put up 115 points. They've certainly learned how to handle adveristy, and that say a LOT about the coaching staff and veterans on this team. We are going to really miss Herb Jones next year.

Oh yeah, just replacing Galin and Javian with actual P-6 basketball talent was a huge boost in the athleticism department. I'm just saying that most of our defensive prowess is related to playing high level team defense rather than having a bunch of bouncy, freak athletes on the roster. That's why we struggled early on but then transitioned to elite after they got used to playing together.

Agree. Is Charlie Henry the defensive focused coach on staff?

Yes, he's the DC per Oats.

I wonder if his association with Hoiberg and the job he has done with our defense will get him considered for Iowa State's opening when they fire Prohm in a couple of weeks. Of course, they may also just bring Hoiberg back. He'd probably take the job. Nebraska is a black hole for basketball.

They both didn't fold from an overall standpoint nor did they fold in the macro, in game standpoint. Think of the games we played after the Bruner injury where almost any Alabama team of the last 10 years would have let go of the rope late and lost or been blown out.

- MSU at home up 5 with 3 minutes left
- Kentucky at home down 2 with 4:30 left
- @ Oklahoma down 11 with 11 mins left (lose by 5)
- @ Missouri down 20 with 6 mins left (lose by 3)
- @ Carolina up 2 with 1 minute left and Carolina ball

This team has almost been TOO good so that the shiny championships are so bright we can't help but focus on them and what we can do to get there that I don't think any of us focus enough on how incredibly consistent and tough this team has been even when not at their best.

And how big a culture change that is from the well earned reputation of this program the last 15 years.

I saw something interesting on Hoiberg that basically said he's the Chip Kelly of college basketball. He hit on a market inefficiency in his first College Basketball job at Iowa State that helped him get ahead of the curve at a place that couldn't win the "normal way"(transfers, pace). Then, when he came back, that market inefficiency had become the norm and he didn't have an adjustment. He was just using the Version 1.0 of a system that 3/4 of the country had moved to Version 4.0, and his secret had become the "normal way".

If Ole Miss can sweep this week against LSU/State at home they might be in the tournament in 7 days.

I'd agree with that point as far as roster construction goes. He was way ahead of the curve when it came to a transfer heavy roster construction philosophy that cut all kinds of player development corners. I'm not sure pace of play has changed extensively in the time he was with the Bulls though. It's definitely an interesting theory on why he was so good as Iowa State and has been an unmitigated disaster at Nebraska. Obviously something changed dramatically, and while Nebraska is basketball hell, Ames isn't exactly the Chapel Hill of the upper Great Plains.
