Q1 - 5-3
Q2 - 7-1
Q3 - 3-1
Q4 - 1-0

We still have the most Q1/Q2 combined victories.

I didn't realize this until just now, but Gonzaga and Baylor are both 6-0 in Q4 games. Surprised me a little, especially Baylor.

The bottom of the BXII is pretty rancid - especially Kansas State and Iowa State. Combined 7-27 (1-19). On top of 2 vs KSU and 1 vs Iowa State they played - Washington (3-14), ARPB (3-16), Central Arkansas (3-14) and Alcorn State (3-9).

That's 7 of 17 games vs opponents with a combined record of 24-95.

I'm sure they got whacked by COVID in the OOC (I know they lost the Gonzaga game), but their OOC schedule was ugly.

Great game vs Illinois, but past that their #2 game was probably Auburn. And #3 game.........ULL or SFA?

Petty, Primo, JQ and Ellis are all shooting right at 40% from three. Herb is at 50%.

On attempts they rank 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th.

Shack has second most attempts and is 33%.

Reese has third most attempts and is 26%.

Some good news from last night - it was our best Point Per Possession game since Mississippi State on January 23.

On the flip side, it was our worst defensive Point Per Possession game since Mississippi State as well

Right now, I will take the uptick in offense. I think these guys play better defense when they are rewarded with offensive success. It should be that way, but it does seem that when the points dried up some folks got depressed and unmotivated.

Alabama holds on to beat South Carolina. I keep hearing how Alabama is vulnerable if they don't hit a bunch of threes. Its actually the opposite: They need to pick it up on defense. Allowed South Carolina to shoot 47% from the field tonight. Not beating any good teams like that

Aaron Torres

Alabama has become my favorite team because of this perception. Held South Carolina to its 3rd-worst points per possession of the season. Yet people see 78 points and think it's an issue. Bama's D has consistently been outstanding all year once you account for their fast pace.

And the reply from Kenpom.

This is such a dumb take. Defense is the only reason we are still winning during the 6 game slump.

Contrary evidence from our own SummerOfGeorge above.

We have been average to below average in offensive efficiency the last 3 weeks, while remaining at Top 5 to Top 15 defense throughout the rolling metrics.

Yea if we were playing even average defense the collapse would be in full swing right now.

Also - Torres wasn't wrong about the South Carolina game. It was not a great defensive effort (however, compared to the average team it was still a good effort). However, he parlayed that into some sort of trend or long-standing issue, which is isn't even close to being.

The offense is starting to get really concerning. No one is skilled at finishing at the rim and Herb is the only guy even considering passing once he gets into the paint. We need Bruner back in a bad way. His ability to pass from inside is invaluable. I know our offense looked good for a few games without him, but now that teams have adjusted we don't seem to have an answer. We just don't have the right kind of players to burn a team who decides to defend the perimeter instead of playing help defense inside.

Say WHAT now?!

Bruner has more offensive rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks in 283 minutes this season than Reese and Rojas have managed to combine for in 556 minutes.

And look at the shooting percentages.

There is a hidden stat in these numbers as well.

The Oats system wants paint touches to lead to open kick-out 3s.

Offensive rebounds are the ultimate paint touch for this. The defense is trying to crash the boards, so they leave their man on the perimeter.

Bruner's 30 ORB is still 2nd on the team behind only Herb with 43, and Bruner hasn't played the last 8 games!

A good deal of those Bruner ORB+AST are going to be open kick-out 3s.

Bruner gets the board, finds Petty/Shack/Primo/Quinerly/Ellis in the corner for a wide open 3, or the corner man can make the extra pass to another open shooter at the elbow or top of the key when the defense is scrambling to close-out and disjointed.

It's a shame the Tchikou isn't able to pick up some of these minutes.

Yes, we badly need Bruner back. His size and abilities completely change the way opponents have to guard us.

The good news is we've been better offensively (incrementally) the last 2 games. Georgia and Vanderbilt are wretched defensive teams and A&M isn't a whole lot better. If we can keep building a little bit, then get Bruner back to supercharge it, maybe we have a shot.

I'm not super bullish on it happening, but at least there have been some signs of improvements individually and as a unit the last 3 halves of basketball.

I know. I really love his game and thought he was going to be a big part of the rotation by this point in the season.
