It’s funny you mentioned this. It’s my first thought when I’ve seen criticism thrown JP’s direction recently. About 200 pages back in this thread, during the LSU game, I said:

quote:

I’m all for the hard hat, but let’s not break Petty’s arm diving for an out of bounds deflection up by 30

So, it’s pretty much nonsense. Petty gets frustrated sometimes, but it’s because he doesn’t like losing. It’s not difficult to see that. Anyone calling his play lazy or effortless at this point really isn’t paying attention.

Calipari isn’t really known for being a disciplinarian. I guess being 5-10 will do that for you.

I think Cal's tolerance for bullshite is a lot lower than you've given him credit for. I've always respected the way his teams play even though they usually beat us. This group of freshmen he signed are just pretty bad though. Boston is the best of the bunch and he couldn't hit the side of a barn if he was standing inside of it.

Seeing Bama -8 as the early number. Really don’t know if I’d lay that as banged up as we are.

Petty, to me, is the exact example of the kind of growth you want to see in players over a college career. Players that give his range of contributions are the reason you see the Top 10-15 usually pretty filled with 3-4 year players.

I can pinpoint the exact game where Petty finally seemed to get that winning basketball games at this level often comes down to which great shooters/scorers make the most effort plays.

It was at Miss St in Avery Johnson's last year.

Since that game I've had no issue at all with Petty's "hard hat" play.

He's always willing to guard the best opposition scorer with 100% effort. Oats has even mentioned Petty asking him if he can guard a hot player.

I've also lost count of the times it's Petty that comes out of a 6 player scramble with a crucial late game rebound.

One announcer interchange I remember from the recent LSU game:

"and that's your All-SEC shooting guard diving for an out of bounds loose ball with a 37 point lead"

"tells you all you need to know

These are great points WIlliam and Mary. I do hope that Petty continues to do these things. He can play, there is no doubt.

Any idea what the discipline deal was about?

In about 15-20 years when Oats retires from Alabama, he'd make a hell of an analyst.

I'd love to hear him do color commentary during a game, or at least participate in one of those Coaches Film Room deals where he breaks down what he sees.

If I had to guess, as frustrating as the rough opening to the season, considering the high expectations, was for us fans, you have to imagine it was a lot more frustrating for 4 year seniors (especially ones that were 1/2 decided to go pro).

I imagine frustration was running really high and there were some exchanges at practice that Oats though it best Petty take a few days and come back refreshed and refocused.

Just reading between the lines based on Oats comments and how things played out.

Love his Wooden quote and focus upon being tough and being competitors when everybody is tired and beat up and not looking back later with regrets.

Oats called Petty a racial slur then punched him if you believe AL.com resident Barner Josh Moon.

We are favored by 8 over LSU.

How is Tennessee only favored by 3.5 over Ole Miss? Seems like easy money.

Other betting lines of interest.

Missouri favored by 4.5 vs Kentucky
Arky favored by 7.5 vs Miss State

I just meant you don’t hear about Cal having discipline issues much. It could be that he’s pretty low tolerance and therefore doesn’t have to deal with it often. His teams obviously have a ton of talent, so I assumed he was putting up with some prima donna stuff from the one and done guys, but that’s admittedly all speculation based on stereotypes.

Cal gets a lot of hate, but I think he’s a pretty likable guy overall. He uses to media to send his guys a message if he needs to, similarly to Saban, but he’s a pretty straight shooter.
