The Greatest College Basketball Programs Ever: Ranking the top teams of all time

quote:

CBS Sports' assembly of the 68 best programs in history (read the ranking of Nos. 68-51 and Nos. 50-26) was objectively driven by the data. Still, I did need to come up with categories and assign values to them. I relied upon wins and losses, NCAA Tournament success, conference dominance, NIT titles -- because it was a significant tournament for decades, and even still is a marked achievement in today's age -- and the cultivation of NBA talent. Those categories' points were added up and the master order was determined.

NCAA Tournament championships (20 points)
Final Four appearances without a national title (10 points)
Regular-season titles (5 points)
Elite Eights without making the Final Four (3 points)
NIT titles (3 points)
NCAA Tournament bids (2 points)
Wins (0.5 points)
Losses (-0.5 points)
Wins over ranked opponents (0.5 points)
Weeks ranked (0.1 point)
Top-10 NBA picks (5 points)
11-30 NBA picks (3 points)
31-60 NBA picks (1 point)

I relied on data from the NCAA record book, Sports Reference, RealGM.com, CollegePollArchive.com, Stats Inc., school record books, KenPom.com and ESPN's College Basketball Encyclopedia. CBS Sports ace researcher Andy Tulin provided all data on teams' wins over ranked opponents. The project was finished in early November, prior to the 2020 NBA Draft and the release of the preseason AP Top 25 poll. Those data points were not factored in. This is from 1938-39 through the 2019-20 season.

quote:

41. Alabama
Record since 1938-39: 1,382-895 | Regular-season titles: 6
NCAA Tournaments: 21 | Final Fours: 0
Weeks ranked: 295 | Top-60 NBA picks: 32
POINTS: 478

If this was a football list, of course Alabama has as good a case as any to be No. 1. In basketball? Crimson Tide fans are perhaps even a little surprised to see their school knocking on the door of the top 40. They shouldn't be, however. Alabama's second in all-time SEC Tournament titles (15 combined regular season and tournament) and third in all-time SEC wins. There even was a time, in 2003, when Mark Gottfried put Alabama atop college basketball and had the Crimson Tide ranked No. 1. Never made a Final Four and its only Elite Eight came in 2004 with a loss to eventual champ UConn, but Bama has accumulated enough victories, made enough NCAA Tournaments, had enough NBA talent and been ranked too frequently not to be edged against on the top 40. If Kira Lewis Jr. goes in the top 10 on Wednesday evening, he'll be the fifth top 10 NBA pick in school history. Outstanding alumni include Reggie King, Robert Horry, Latrell Sprewell, Collin Sexton, JaMychal Green, Antonio McDyess, Gerald Wallace and Mo Williams. Wimp Sanderson and Gottfried each have a solid case for strongest coach in school history.

*Stolen from the Govt Tide thread on the rant.*

Here's where we are predicted with bracketology...

While it's good we don't have Gonzaga or Baylor as our 1 seed, having a potential Oklahoma St as a 7 seed is a damn trap game. I'm pretty sure they have the #1 pick in the draft. That would not be a match up I'd want to see in the first weekend.

I’d honestly be okay with it. Herb would matchup very well with him. It would also be a great opportunity for his draft stock.

I was wondering the same. Did they win their appeal?

Also frick that bracket. We'd draw UNC or Oklahoma State, while Virginia gets Navy, then SDSU/Minnesota?

Things are going to change big time by tourney time. Any bracket right now is just silly. The only seeds we know for sure are Baylor and Gonzaga unless Auburn can knock off Baylor. Even then they stay a 1 seed right now I’m sure.

- Stanford verge of being Q1
- WKU on the verge of being Q2

- Clemson verge falling to Q2

If us and Kentucky win tommorow that will probably give us 7 Q1 wins in 18 games

We're actually gonna get the official top-16 of the selection committee on February 1st. If we beat OU it'll be really interesting where they put us

I think Baylor and Gonzaga would have to lose multiple games for their 1 seeds to be at risk. Baylor has more margin for error there because odds are any loss they sustain the rest of the way would be Q1/2, but I think even if Gonzaga lost to a shitty WCC team their dismantling of that murderer's row OOC schedule they played will negate it.

Yea Gonzaga has 6 Q1 wins by an average of 14 pts and only 1 of them was less than 10.

I could see that. There’s a big drop off from those two teams. That’s why I think two #1 seeds are legitimately up for grabs.

I think Auburn beats Baylor tomorrow which would really boost us if we get the sweep on them.

Also the Missouri game will look nice if we can win that.

I think we could afford to lose 1 more game as long as it’s to Oklahoma, Missouri, or Auburn and still make a #1 seed if we swept the SEC tournament.
