Oats has a meltdown every game or two when JQ decides to take a random pull up from just inside the 3 point line.

Our tempo and pace should wear those bigs down! We got to get out in transition and run. One person doesn't scare me. There's not ONE team that scares me now could there be bad matchups...SURE but we are a NIGHTMARE matchup for those teams as well! EVERY SINGLE TEAM HAS FLAWS

I love how Oats has conditioned me to flinch every single time I see anyone on our team take any sort of mid range shot and when someone on a team we are playing takes one i'm nodding my head and saying "yeah, you can have those all day - good job defense, grab the board, go, go, go, go".

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to finally get to watch two decent teams play and think "Well that was stupid. We wouldn't have taken that shot" or "why the frick are you walking the ball up the court after a miss?!?" instead of just being jealous of teams who play semi-competent basketball.

Petty took a weird half spin dribble fadeaway shot from like 20 feet a couple games ago and I about lost it.

I do admit I would like to see us take a few more of the midrange shots (still in the paint) based on our rim-finishing percentage and the amount of shots we get blocked.

I'm not talking about Cam Thomas/Moses Moody shots from the elbow. I just mean a pull-up floater 8 feet out while still in the paint.

It looks like Quinerly has been given the green light to do that (or else he is just doing it anyway and hoping he doesn't get pulled, lol).

I agree with that. I think a pull up from 8-12 feet can be a good shot.

I’m guessing that if Oats discourages it, he probably does it because getting college players to have shot discipline is hard. Easier to say “we don’t take those shots” then it is to say “that midrange is ok, but that ones not.”

Or maybe it’s just seen as more efficient to always attempt to get to the rim.

I do not miss the 18-20 footers. Talk about cringing - when someone passes up an open-ish 3 to dribble into an 18 footer. fricking nope.

Nate Oats Named Finalist for both the Naismith and USBWA Coach of the Year Awards

Alabama men's basketball head coach Nate Oats has been named a finalist for the 2021 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's Coach of the Year and the United States Basketball Writers Association Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award, both organizations announced Wednesday.

Oats is one of four coaches from across the nation to be recognized on each list, joining Scott Drew (Baylor), Mark Few (Gonzaga) and Juwan Howard (Michigan).

Yep - JQ has done a nice job of those jump stop short shots. I have to imagine Oats is fine with those as they are much more like layups and avoid charges. Shooting in rythm threes within 8 feet, especially when you have mastered the backboard, is a super high percentage look.

The 12-18 footers are the devil shots.

2021 NCAA Tournament bracket predictions: March Madness expert picks, winners, upsets, favorites to win

quote:

David Cobb, College basketball writer
Predicted champion: Alabama

The Crimson Tide put to rest the notion that they are ill-suited for a single-elimination tournament by capturing the SEC Tournament crown while shooting just 29.7% from 3-point range in their last two games of the event. So what happens if Alabama starts shooting better than 35% from beyond the arc? It could happen, and if it does, this squad's unique offensive style could carry it to history. As for Rutgers making the Elite Eight? The Scarlet Knights were robbed of an appearance last season because of the pandemic but have finally made it back to the Big Dance for the first time since 1991. With a favorable draw that features an opening game against a Clemson squad that looked bad in the ACC Tournament, the Scarlet Knights will have a great chance to make some noise. After navigating the Big Ten gauntlet, facing a gritty Houston team in the second round won't intimidate this squad.

quote:

Chip Patterson, College basketball writer
Predicted champion: Alabama

The Crimson Tide play at a relentless pace, shoot a ton of threes and defend at an elite level. In an NCAA Tournament that may be mentally exhausting at times because of the strict protocol and bubble-ish existence in Indiana, the last opponent you want to face is Alabama. The Tide want to run, get up in your face on defense and can change the fortunes of a game in three minutes or less if they get hot from 3-point range or force a couple quick turnovers. It's a blue-collar team that welcomes the grind, and that mentality will pay off during the ups and downs of an unprecedented NCAA Tournament.

Bruce Pearl really did break the alabama fanbasePosted on 4/10/19 at 6:12 pm
up vote49down vote46

I think what makes it so hard to swallow is that they all bought in to thinking that landing 5 stars Collin Sexton and John Petty was going to bring the program up out of the ashes overnight. But then Auburn ended up stealing the show with an SEC regular season championship. Never mind that Avery Johnson took them to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 6 seasons. Seeing Auburn make another run in the SEC tournament this year was the final nail in the coffin for the fanbase and they lost their shite, the administration included.

Now they are floundering around with their third coach in six seasons, desperately trying to catch up to the machine that Pearl has assembled.

It's like watching Auburn try to match Saban and his success, but without the 2010 national Championship, Kick Six, etc.
