Today is John Petty’s birthday.

Tonight is must win for this trip to be successful imo.
Would be borderline disastrous to go 1-2 with a win against UNLV.

We are now -2, however ESPN BPI only has us at 41.9% for this matchup.

I dont know why any of the bigs are shooting from behind the 3 pt line. Many times we just have 5 people standing behind the line. I guess maybe to open the lane so we can dribble drive, but other teams are not buying it. They just back off and let Reese, Bruner, Rojas and Jones shoot the 3.
IMO, Rojas is worse than Reese. Reese at least gets some rebounds. Also not sure I like Rojas and Bruner getting a rebound and taking off dribbling like they are the point guard. Bruner is also a good passer, so get him closer to the paint so he can pass off to slashing players.

We only need 4 people shooting 3s:
Primo
Petty
Shack
Quinerly
Last night I said Herb occasionally, but he doesn't either.

Obviously shooting 3s is Oats game, but you cant just let all the bad shooters take those long shots. Its just stupid.

Taking low percentage jumpers 15 feet from the basket is not going to cause any post defender to abandon the paint.

If they don’t shoot the defenders will sag off cutting off our driving lanes to the basket. That stops our drive and kick outs and forces our guys with no touch around the rim to force heavily contested layups. You wanna go back to the Avery offense? We don’t have enough one on one creators to be successful doing that.

Not happening. Oats hates mid range shots because they are lower percentage 2s. 3s and At the rim 2s are what we do

For anyone that uses Twitter, I recommend giving @BamaFilmRoom a follow. One of the guys from Crimson Crossover runs the account and he does an excellent job of highlighting plays and breaking down short clips from games on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
Whether you are a basketball savant or you don't really know what you are watching and want to learn more about Oats' system or just basketball in general, I think most people will find it useful.

Mid-range jumpers are not the solution to a lack of players who can create their own shot. If they don't have touch around the basket they're not going to have touch on a pull-up 15 footer. It's not like a catch and shoot 3. Suddenly stopping your momentum and taking a good jump shot all in one fluid motion off the dribble is actually not easy and something most guys aren't going to be able to do. Primo and JQ are the only guys on this team who might be able to. There are plenty of ways to generate open looks in basketball through motion that doesn't involve dribble penetration. We just have to work more of it into our sets.

I responded to you on accident instead of the guy saying only 4 guys need to shoot threes. I completely agree we shouldn’t be taking pull up mid ranges.

Gotcha. Yeah I just don't get the obsession with pull up mid-range jumpers. It doesn't do anything to space the defense out or keep them honest. They're going to be happy to force that kind of shot.

Bama BBall pick record (2-1)
Bama (-130 ML) is the play today. While we should be able to cover the -2.5 spread, I feel much more confident eating a little juice in what could be a nail biter to the end. Providence is an elite rebounding team that can play us tough off of second chance opportunities throughout the entire game. This could be a free throw game at the end and the spread could be ruined off of one make or miss at the line.

I want to see Primo get more minutes.
He needs to be at 20+ mpg and our 2nd/3rd scoring option behind Petty/Shack sooner rather than later.
Still think this team can be competitive with anyone in the SEC as long as we start to mesh as a team. Feels like everyone is still getting a feel for their place in the offense during live game action so hopefully everyone starts to get more comfortable and confident with their roles.
We had 30 practices, but without an exhibition game these guys have only had three games together now and we are expecting them to be a well oiled machine. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. I know we've done some 5 on 5 stuff in practices, but even that won't truly simulate live game action.
Last night Reese and Rojas combined for 1-9 shooting - all from three point range. I'm going to still give Rojas a break because all three of his looks came in a 30 second window and all were actually good shots. The ugly part of that is that he missed all of them and didn't inspire a lot of confidence. Rojas has just enough driving ability to take the bigger guys guarding him to the hole, but his problem is he doesn't know how to pass to the open man when he is driving. He just sees red and drives all the way and forces up a shot or turns it over. I would like to see him continue driving to draw others into the paint if he can keep his head up and find his open teammates on the perimeter. That is something that is teachable/coachable and I think would be a big help.
As far as Reese goes, I guess it just is what it is. I don't know if it is his high school coaches, the Avery staff or this staff's fault, but apparently no one has ever told this kid that he isn't the next Sam Perkins. Being 6'9" and 230 pounds give you a lot of advantages on a basketball court and Alex Reese never uses a single one of them. He's never averaged five rebounds a game. He's never finished a season with more assists than turnovers. He's had only one season with a FG% over 40% and even that was only at 40.3%. His FT percentage has dropped each year. He never leverages his size for rebound positioning. He constantly loses his man on weak side defense. The list goes on and on. I honestly do not see any real consistent value that he brings to the team when he is on the floor. It's a damn shame that Tchikou is out and can't have these minutes. I don't care what we would get out of KAH, Gary or Miles - the minutes going to Reese need to just start going to one of these other guys and let's just see which of them can help the team the most and move on.

I’m much more concerned with defense and taking care of the ball than I am with our shot selection*
Although Rojas is testing that a bit.
Anyway, this is a massive game. Winning a tournament like this would be great, but it’s really about how your resume looks coming out of it.
