Bohannon has already surpassed Goof in the baseball brains category and we’re looking good. I know the schedule is weak so far but it was last year too and we were already seeing considerable flaws. So far, he’s getting the best out of these guys. It’s a joy to watch good coaching even if he doesn’t have a loaded roster.

I doubt it would take 35 wins to simply get in a regional. Probably 32. Need to be 40+ to be in discussion to host a regional.

The problem is this is probably the worst OOC schedule we've had in..........20 years? This is like Gottfried pre-NCAA snub bad.

But, it's pretty out in front thinking to start thinking about RPI/SOS/etc for making the tournament considering we went 5-24-1 in the SEC last season

Yeah, there's not a lot there. I don't know how good Oklahoma is. They lost to Valpo once and almost twice. We really need to win that series and we need to beat Southern Miss next week. Aside from that the chance to get good wins pre-conference just isn't there.

I don't mind the scheduling, though. This team needed to get some early wins after the debacle of last year. Not having a couple games with South Alabama should be fixed IMO.

I have to agree 100%!!!! Take a look at Keith Holcombe. Granted that the competition hasn't been the greatest, but currently, he leads the nation in BA at .684 and OBP .739 and 15th nationally at 1.000 in Slugging %. We have scored 58 runs in 6 games and it took 12+ games to reach that total. That tells me that he has a set approach at the plate with these guys instead of just swinging wildly. I'll take it.

Collegiate Baseball News, which everyone realizes is the only outlet that knows what it is talking about, has us ranked #30 this week, which is significant since they are the only poll that ranks more than 25 teams.

The Poll That Matters - Tide #30

Of course I guess I should point out the fact that this still puts us at tenth in the conference.

Can some of you more knowledgeable baseball fans tell me what we are doing differently at the plate? We seems to be a much better offensive team. I'm not sure if we are being more aggressive or just better coached. I'm a dumbass when it comes to baseball

Just being smarter about what pitches we are going after depending on the count and the guy on the mound. I know that's vague but it really varies by batter and pitcher. Our guys just seem clued in moreso to the mental part of hitting than they were last year. There are times to be aggressive and times to be patient and last year it seemed like our guys didn't know one from the other. I think this group seems better in that regard.

That may not help at all.

There was an article that came out about 20-25 years ago called Hitting by the Numbers. In it, it discussed what pitches to look for on ceetain counts. For example, 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 counts are traditional fastball counts because the pitcher is looking to get on top early. You go to the plate thinking fastball is the only pitch I am swinging at and tou will not swing at anything else.
Situational hitting and knowing what to do each AB. Runner at 2nd with less than 2 out, put the ball in play behind the runner to allow them to advance, don't try to yank an outside fastball into the playground area in left.
I think simply put, coaches are getting them to focus on each AB instead of free swinging.

In a nutshell we hired a coach that is coaching up the damn team instead of threatening to revoke their scholarship like a douchebag.

Samford has been tested early on, they've played a couple of top 25 teams and won once. They took 3 of 4 from Harvard (not sure how good Harvard is) but they didn't dominate them or anything. Could be a tough midweek game.

Well, here we go. Classic Gaspard loss game tonight on the road at an in-state mid major.

Let's see if we can take another step forward.

Midweek games are tough. I guess we'll go with the whole staff approach on the mound again.

You know, honestly, most every coach, high school and beyond, has players take an “approach” at the plate. Whether “hit by numbers,” “educated guess,” “dead red” or simply the “quality at bat”. Approach isn’t the biggest key. The real key is the mental game. How confident and locked in are hitters. With that said, the “quality at bat” philosophy is probably best, as it gives guys a wide variety of opportunities to be successful. Heck a guy can strike out but force six or seven pitches and gets high fives in the dugout. That does a lot for confidence and mental state.

Same goes for pitching. Mental toughness is key. Can you make tough throws in tough situations?
