I’m obviously a Maddux fan if you couldn’t tell from my username (and Glavin), but those type of pitchers would not be nearly as successful in today’s game given the reduced strike zone and advancements in hitting, analytics, etc. Smoltz would still have been really good, but you don’t see anyone that tops out at 91-92 mph being a successful starting pitcher for 7-10 years in today’s game. The game has changed, and power arms are necessary when you get to the postseason against elite hitters.
I 100% disagree. Im not saying that all else being the same, extra velocity wouldnt make you better or that you shouldnt recruit high velocity pitchers that have command. I think the issue is that too many kids, put all their eggs into the velocity basket and they dont learn how to pitch. In HS if you throw 90+, you dont need a good changeup and a good breaking pitch. You dont even need command as you can walk a batter or two every inning but still get out of it mostly.
Another issue is that yeah, everyone throws harder now...but human beings havent somehow evolved over 2 decades. We just figured out how to push the limits. Now the genetic freaks are throwing 100 instead of 94 and the normal good athletes are throwing 93 instead of 88. There is a huge cost to that though...injury. We had to baby Quick with his pitch counts all year long just to keep him healthy. He also lost command easily.
Give me the guy that throws 88-90 and has good stuff and location with a 3-4 ERA...and can pitch 7 innings. If we have 3 starters like that...you can win the league if you have an offense that can generate runs(we have a coach that knows how to do that). Sprinkle in a few pitchers like Quick when you can land them and I think you have a recipe for consistent success

You just said a guy that struggles to throw 90+mph should be used the same way guys that throw 98-102mph in the big leagues are used? Wow…this is wrong on multiple fronts.
This doesn’t have jack shite to do with it.
Oz has an odd delivery.
It was obvious at the end of the year he was no where near 100%.
He even said after the Georgia series that he was not 100%.
I understand that nobody is 100% that late in the year but perhaps if we rested him against the UABs of the world from time to time and didn’t throw him on back-to-back days after throwing multiple innings the day before, we would have seen a little better version of Oz down the stretch.
That’s all I’m saying.

The problem was we needed him to win those midweek games in many cases. So that’s back to the bullpen issue at large.

Why does Auburn's coach never get put on coaching search lists? What he's done there is amazing and really wish someone would take him away from there. I'm jealous that they get to host regionals and super regionals. Our ballpark would look amazing if it was ever full, especially the right field. Right field is a great setup

I think him and Auburn are married to each other. He has a baseball AD. Really good park. No pressure to make a run at the CWS every year. Auburn can live with not making a regional every once in a while if it means he’s rebuilding. He can accomplish everything that he needs to at Auburn. There’s just no real reason for him to leave.

Butch is from Aberdeen and was an assistant at State for 6 years so I'm kinda shocked MSU didn't make a run at him. I feel like he might have actually left Auburn for Starkville.

We sure did. At the end of the day though, those games really didn’t mean squat in terms of our regional seed. So the question becomes at what cost were those wins?
It’s just a personal opinion. I think 29 appearances was too much for him. He only had 16 last year at Penn granted he was also playing the field.
His arm could have been shot at the end of the year regardless of appearances so who knows.

Velo is important. In D1 if your fastball is 83 and you have a great 78 mph slider and a wicked 72 mph change up, you aren’t going to be successful. A flat and straight 96 mph fastball alone is no good. But one with some movement and/or command makes off speed that much better.

Maybe not, but the metrics we were leaning on and the resume we put together weren’t going to look as good with 4-5 midweek losses.

I still think we wind up in the same regional. JMO.
I’m sure I’d be the first one bitching the second somebody other than Oz blew a midweek lead.
Hindsight is 20/20

This is why I hate the internet. No where did I mention 83. You did...then pretended I said it so that you could make a stupid argument against something I never said. I said around 90 which is leagues different than 83...which is an average HS pitcher.

0-4 in regionals earns you a contract extension these days? Very puzzling move.

41 wins man
Not very long ago we only dreamt about making regionals.
Now we’re pissed we can’t advance.

Nice to be safely in regionals TBH. One step at a time

From where our program has been lately? Yeah. We took a step forward this year. We need another one next year, but Vaughn seems like a very solid coach.

You really this sensitive a dude that you need to react this way? No where did I even imply that you so much as mentioned 83 mph. It was an extreme example to illustrate a point that velocity does matter.
The fact that you reacted this way tells me that you aren't much more than some guy who played a little high school ball and thinks if he hadn't been overlooked, cheated or whatever that you coulda, shoulda gone somewhere.
I mean your take on Justin Lebron's swing was pure comedic gold. Dude is going to be a first round draft pick who led our team with 18 homers over a 60 game season. But, hey, you and your pitcher are going to shut him down.
Here is a little tidbit of baseball knowledge for you. 100% of batters have a hole in their swing. If you can successfully throw it in the hole, you may well get them out. After all, you've got 7 guys behind you. But even MLB pitchers miss their spots 60-75% of the time. If that's the case, you better have some velo to go with it.
