I don't see Meyer going to USC (let alone coaching again). Great program with terrible cost of living.

Truthfully as good as Urban is USC doesn't need a legendary coach to return to prominence. USC needs a competent coach. Just look in the Pac 12 and there are coaches in that very conference who would have USC in the top 5 if they were there. Shaw at Stanford, Herm Edwards, Cristobal, Willingham, Leach, and Peterson. I say all that to say USC just needs to make a competent hire. But, they feel they are "SC" and they will likely try to make a big splash and get an NFL guy if not Urban.

NFL guy might be Jack Del Rio, he's USC alum. USC would be smart to take a look at Matt Campbell. I think Harbaugh would do better at USC than at his current gig.

Regardless of what happens at USC, there has to be a great attraction to coming in after Tua gets taken number 1 and having a chance to compete for the job as a true freshman. Plus he knows Sark and will have sick skill talent to work with in the best conference in the country. If I’m Young, I go to Bama regardless. Urban has a great gimmick offense but he doesn’t produce elite NFL QBs. Leak...nope...Tebow...bust...are any of his OSU QBs even starting in the NFL? His pop warner offense doesn’t translate to the NFL. Easy call for Young.

Devil's advocate, what elite NFL QBs has Sark's offense produced?

Jake Locker, John David Booty, Cody Kessler, Mark Sanchez?

Bone seems to like Bama's chances especially since they are not pursuing any other QB's...

SC is just a mess right now. However, if we were to sign Meyer, I think Young ends up staying.

USC Alumni/Boosters' letter sent to Chancellor Folt regarding USC's corrupt AD hiring practices
(Not the only athletics-related scandal at USC.)

USC may not think it's a very good idea to hire Urban Meyer, due to his questionable integrity. He also has health issues that are exacerbated by the pressures of a high profile head coaching job and adversely impact his job performance.

Although integrity and health issues both led to Meyer's "resignation" at UF and again at OSU, unless his health issues are more of an excuse than a real problem, he may feel another high-pressure coaching job is just too risky for him.

However, since Meyer's issues didn't stop him from being offered and taking the OSU job, it won't surprise me if it turns out the same with the USC job. But even if Meyer is named USC's next HC, I don't think it's a sure thing that Young would choose USC instead of Bama. We'll see.

Potential replacements for USC's Clay Helton (247Sports)

OSU's Urban Meyer knows who he was; but who does he want to be? (Cleveland.com)

tl;dr: "Dude, it's Stoops!"

Rivals Rankings Question of the Week: Who's on decommit watch?

quote:

Bryce Young

This is a difficult question because I don’t see a lot of guys in the West who are on the verge of flipping because many of the top ones remain uncommitted, but one player to watch is four-star quarterback Bryce Young. Alabama continues to heavily pursue the four-star USC commit and he has developed a great relationship with Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian through the recruiting process. There are still a lot of unknowns, especially when it comes to USC’s coaching situation, so this is still a fluid situation. Young loves USC and he has to like how the new USC offense is performing, but turning down Alabama - especially after what it’s done with Tua Tagovailoa - will be difficult.

quote:

Jayson Jones

There have been quite a few decommitments recently in my states, and there will be more, but looking at the top of the lists in each of my states, Jayson Jones would be one I mention here. Jones is a four-star defensive tackle that has been committed to Alabama since July 2018. He has mentioned multiple schools — like Florida and Oregon to name a few, but Georgia Tech is one to watch. There has been chatter that Alabama is still evaluating Jones, as he comes back this season from a torn ACL last fall, and Jones still talks a lot about Alabama, but the Yellow Jackets are a threat here. He has visited Atlanta, he knows Georgia Tech offensive line coach Brent Key from his time at Alabama and Georgia Tech is recruiting Jones harder than anyone right now.

Not sure that matters with the contract he would receive.

I 100% believe Meyer will coach major college football again.

USCw, in whatever shape it is in now, is still a major draw for any available coach. The PAC12 being in "bad shape" makes it that much easier to win a conference that's still a Power 5.

This is the ideal situation for Meyer.

He arrived in the SEC as Saban was leaving LSU for the pros. UA nor AU was in great shape. The east was on the downward trend. UT just finished off a 5-6 season and the future for Fulmer was bleak. UGA was still UGA 10 win season at best nothing more and USC just hired Spurrier which even with the Ole Ball Coach no one expected USC to be a contender. Meyer timed it and walked into a perfect storm.

Same thing when he went to OSU and the current state of that conference.

Alabama Football Recruiting Rumors: Will Shipley Offer, 2020 #1 Class Ranking, Flipping Bryce Young?
15:25

Published on Sep 17, 2019
Alabama Football Recruiting allows the Crimson Tide to reload not rebuild. Perhaps that’s why Nick Saban’s team has become a shoo-in to make (and win) the national championship year in and year out, largely in part to Saban’s dominance as both a coach and a recruiter. Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class boasts 22 hard commits, ranking No. 1 in the SEC and No. 2 overall according to 247 Sports. College Football Now host Harrison Graham has the inside scoop on Alabama Football 2020 and 2021 recruiting. I dont follow lots of recruiting guys..so dont know anything about this kid... let me know should you want more of his stuff rt66

Will Shipley, a 5-star running back out of Matthews, NC is the hottest name currently linked to Bama’s 2021 class. Shipley received an offer from Alabama, adding to his 25 scholarship offers from schools like Clemson, Florida, Georgia, and Ohio State. Last season Shipley racked up 2,000 yards of offense rushing and receiving along with 26 touchdowns. Clemson hosted the running back for their game vs. Texas A&M. Could we see yet another Clemson vs. Bama showdown for who wins over Shipley?

Jahquez Robinson, four-star cornerback, took an official visit to Oklahoma this past week but shouldn't be a concern for Bama fans. Robinson is expected to enroll early and seems to be enjoying visits. Timothy Smith on the other hand is a little different. Smith is “keeping [his] recruitment open” despite his “hard” commitment to Alabama in July. Harrison will breakdown his recruitment process & give a little insight into why Florida might be a school to flip Smith.

For a proven nc-winning coach, making $9/yr. at Bama, Clemson, UGA---makes sense. At USC, it needs to be $12 million to compensate for a decline in standard of living. This isn't the 1980s, plus USC admin. are notoriously cheapskates. They lucked out on Pete Carroll, but all of their hires have been USC people, some making lateral moves at best.

Urban did develop Alex Smith but that was the peak for him. The so-called NFL qb creating guru seldom exists. The closes I can think of might be Craig Bohl of all people.

In a nutshell: Gilbert and Joseph we are the favorites.

Grimes is a maybe. Depends on available slots. Not the highest guy on the
Totem pole.

Sav'ell Smalls long shot. We haven't pursued him too vigorously lately.

Caveat, recruiting is fluid. This is just current scuttlebutt.
