We need to hope he can bring his assistant from Buffalo, Bryan Hodgson. His connections in the JUCO ranks is something that could pay off in the short run.

Sounds like that is happening unless Hodgson gets the head job at Buffalo

I was looking at their local media and the comments on Twitter. Seems there’s a strong push to promote him:

quote:

Sources: UB donor Tunney Murchie campaigning for Bryan Hodgson to get the job, which could make all the difference. For now, Hodgson has a deal with Alabama in the range of $275k per year.

Source: Buffalo assistant Bryan Hodgson will be a serious candidate for its head coaching vacancy. Hodgson recruited all 4 signees & 7 of the 8 returners.

Shouldn't matter if Petty is out of town. Should still be able to talk to the new coach.

Then clean house and bring in Bucky

I highly doubt Bucky could come close to Pettway's recruiting ability. I understand the clean house mentality and agree that it'd be good for Pettway to get experience elsewhere.

At the same time, let's not act like Pettway's recruiting is easily replaced. Pettway is a really good recruiter. Bucky has no experience recruiting at this level.

I care way more about the coaching ability than recruiting ability. Get me the best assistants he can get and recruiting will work itself out.

I agree, but the fact that he hasn't might tell us how far gone Petty already feels like he is. Might've already left Alabama in his mind.

I don't really care about cleaning house. The head coach is who sets the tone anyway. I don't want to keep Pelphrey or Rosemond, but I'm fine with Pettway sticking around.

Obviously if Antoine wants to move up in the world then he will have to eventually move on, but his stock can get much higher if Oats transforms our program.

Can we sticky this one and drop the coaching search thread? It does get confusing.

Exactly. Petty made time to talk to a reporter about entering the transfer portal. I don't believe Oats is really concerned with it. Pretty much tells you what you need to know about Petty

Sure would be nice. It'll be fun to see what gets screwed up

Went and looked at the transfer portal to see who might be available for Bama to pick up.

Someone who knows more about it and enjoys that sort of thing might be able to create us a list by position of likely targets.

Would be another interesting topic for discussion...I am too lazy and uninformed to make a good list.

SIAP

Moving forward can we all agree that this is the new and only basketball related thread to post in? Not sure what the hell Boz is doing, but this board is a bit of a mess right now. There’s no need to post random news and tidbits in three or four different threads imo. Post it all in here and let the others die. Hopefully this one will be stickied and the others anchored soon. If you haven’t already, please RA for sticky on this one and RA for anchor on all other basketball related threads.

Which returning player benefits the most under Oats next year?

My thoughts would be Reese or Kira

Reese - Oats can develop his shot making him much more cocnsistent

Kira - Understanding the game more and managing his minutes better

And I wish Norris had a couple years left under Oats

I'd think that, IF they buy in and work their arse off (and stay), guys like Reese/Mack/Petty do. And honestly, Herb can kind of start over and be a slasher (or try, at least).

I think it all depends what the buy in is. It seems pretty clear he's a good teacher from everything we've read, and we have a roster that is actually pretty decently built to run a variation of his system and that roster has guys who have just stalled.

But, as we know from other new coaching situations, sometimes those guys just aren't that good and the "talent" was overrated all along. We'll see.

Here’s the interview Coach Oats did with Wimp and Barry. He said he FLEW to Huntsville last night to meet with Kira’s parents. He also confirmed that our S&C position is open LINK
