Breaking down Alabama’s 85-man roster after Signing Day (BamaOnLine)
quote:

National Signing Day has come and gone, and Alabama added 20 players to its roster.

After subtracting the departing seniors, the underclassmen that declared early for the 2018 NFL Draft and linebacker Mekhi Brown’s transfer -- and adding the newcomers -- the Crimson Tide currently has 85 scholarship players signed for the 2018-19 season.

For those keeping count at home, that’s the NCAA limit for football scholarships. But much like Brown, there could more departures on the horizon, as coach Nick Saban said he would like to add another defensive lineman and quarterback to his current roster.

Alabama will likely search the junior college and graduate transfer reserves for those positions, but if a move isn’t made, Saban suggested another route the Tide could take on the D-line.

“We were actually hoping to get one more defensive lineman in this class,” Saban said Wednesday. “We feel really good about the two guys that we got. Stephon Wynn is a really good player, a big power guy. (Christian) Barmore is the same kind of guy.

“I think some of the outside ‘backer type guys have become defensive linemen, so the fact that we got some really good guys at outside ‘backer that have really good size and really good size potential may grow into something else in their career here. But that’s something that remains to be seen. But we feel really good about those two guys.

“Again, if we had our druthers we’d have got one more guy at that position, and we’ll continue to maybe look and evaluate and see if there’s somebody out there that would help us.”

Regardless of what happens, Alabama currently has a complete roster as of the morning of Feb. 9. Below is a breakdown of the Crimson Tide’s 85-man roster after National Signing Day.

Note: See updates at bottom of next post.

Note: As of Feb 7, UA has 85 scholarship players signed for the 2018 season. Any scholarships for potential transfers (QB, DL, LB) or grad transfer kicker Austin Jones (PWO) will require attrition (e.g., graduating RS SRs who rarely play). But it's doubtful that Austin Jones will get a scholarship because it would cost UA an initial counter spot.

Thanks for the breakdown. I've got to think some position moves will be coming up with regards to the DL. Just way too thin, especially if you consider that three of those guys are likely gone after this season.

I know there's been talk about getting Kedrick James there, which makes sense given his size at 270+ right now. I'd think Parks might also be a candidate to move if he is indeed already 260.

well we only need one player to have a 3 deep, and if brown had stuck that's exactly what we would have had. It was just unfortunate that this year was do bad for defensive tackles, there just was not much quality to go around, and we lost our best recruiters on the defensive side of the ball with a just a few weeks to signing day. We are set at pretty much every other position, and the DL we do have are of extremely high quality

I'm pretty sure Ronnie Clark and Josh Casher have been in Tuscaloosa since the mid 80's.

It's weird how some names stick in your mind from watching recruiting to being a RS Senior. To me, it makes it seem like they were holdovers from the Shula years.

James seems like a good possibility at DE. Parks has LB speed (4.6), athleticism and coverage skills, so the staff may want him at LB.

Are any of our OL athletic, strong and nasty enough to move to DL? Iirc, Anthony Steen was pretty good at both OL & DL. We're stacked at OL and the 2019 in-instate OL talent is good too.

But the problem is that if we don't have the numbers or have just 1-2 injuries, we might be forced to take the redshirt off of players that need it. Barmore will need a redshirt this fall, IMO. We need 5-6 DL this recruiting cycle.

SR: Keaton Anderson (RS) From the RollTide.com Roster - 2015 (Freshman) Redshirted during his first season at The University of Alabama so he can only be a RS-Jr this year.
JR: Xavian Marks 2015 (Freshman)and has recorded stats every year... seems should be a Sr?

SR. Ronnie Clark (RS)if there was ever a guy with more heart or one that had been snake bit by injuries, I am too forgetful to remember one. Wonder if this guy would consider moving to a GA/Intern/Analysis position to start getting ready for the Life after football?

So, if Bama is at 85 and they add Schollarship guys this late, there will be a need for guys to be "processed" or transfer out? Who would leave if there were new guys added?

I think all three will leave as grad transfers.

Good catch. The BOL and rolltide.com rosters match for those two. So I alerted BOL to the article errors and edited my post.

Xavian's brother is a walk on.

Projecting Alabama's defensive depth chart after Signing Day (BamaOnLine)

quote:

National Signing Day is in the rearview mirror, and Alabama now has a full tank to worth with -- or a full, 85-man roster of players -- for the not-so-distant 2018 college football season.

The reigning champs signed 20 combined players during the early and routine signing days, so the Crimson Tide’s projected 2018 depth chart needs to be adjusted with the additions.

Below is BamaOnLine’s best guess at the Tide’s defensive depth chart fo this season.

*** Disclaimer: This is not Alabama’s official depth chart. This is derived from the Crimson Tide’s official depth chart from fall camp of 2017, observations from all of the media viewing periods of practice from this past season and pure predictions on my part.

Defensive line

DE -- Raekwon Davis, LaBryan Ray, Stephon Wynn

NG -- Johnny Dwight, Phidarian Mathis

DE -- Isaiah Buggs, Quinnen Williams, Christian Barmore

Reasoning: Alabama lost four defensive linemen this offseason and signed two during the early signing period. Following a National Signing Day decommitment, Nick Saban voiced his desire to add a third defensive lineman, most likely a defensive tackle by way of graduate transfer. With the pool of returning players being thin, adding a nose guard is a top priority.

Players like Davis, Buggs, Williams and even Ray, as a true freshman, received plenty of reps in 2017, however, to lead the next wave of Tide D-inemen with Da’Ron Payne and company.

Outside linebacker

SAM -- Christian Miller, Terrell Lewis, Jamey Mosley, Ben Davis, Cameron Latu

JACK -- Anfernee Jennings, Christopher Allen, Jarez Parks, Eyabi Anoma, Jordan Davis

Reasoning: Four of the five linebackers the Tide signed this cycle are considered either outside linebackers or defensive ends, although they could eventually move inside or permanently put their hand in the dirt. Outside of Mekhi Brown transferring, though, all of UA’s OLBs will be back in 2018, and the four newcomers, including Parks and Anoma, will provide plenty of depth.

That’s something that was needed this past season when Miller and Lewis, who will once again lead the outside ‘backers, went down with injuries in the season opener against Florida State.
