Recruiting analyst Mike Farrell caused a buzz yesterday when he said that Arch Manning, the No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class, would be a three-star recruit if not for his last name. Many recruiting analysts have disagreed with him, including On3 Sports' J.D. PicKell...
quote:

“This kind of calls into question: How much is the Manning name boosting Arch Manning? Ultimately asking the question is Arch Manning overrated?” PicKell said on The Hard Count. “Because this person with a fair amount of credibility made that claim. He also said, ‘Anytime I watch another quarterback in this class, I like them better,’ which that in itself implies that stars are somehow relative to the rest of your peers. Like, we’re grading you based on how other guys around you are doing and not in relation to just the model as a whole, which that in itself feels like the first chink in the armor.

“But I asked Charles Power … [to] talk to me about Arch Manning. I actually asked him that exact question. How much of his last name is boosting him? And he had a couple of key points. One, he said [the] last name, obviously, looks good. But when it comes to just what you’re watching on tape and what you watch up close with Arch Manning, he said he’s got the quickest release of a high school prospect that [Power’s] ever seen. And Charles Power has seen a lot of high school prospect. He also said he’s the most physically developed of the group and he’s very polished. Doesn’t sound like a three-star quarterback to me.”

“They’re not just handing out five stars,” PicKell said. “They’re not just giving out five-star grades like they’re candy on Halloween. Five-star grades are incredibly difficult to come by and every single recruiting service that I’ve seen to this point has Arch Manning as a five-star. So that means that either all these recruiting services are in cahoots or Arch Manning’s really that guy.”

Arch has avoided the high level competition of the camps to either prove or disprove his high rating. He is given the benefit of the doubt, where a typical player would be penalized for not playing against the top level competition the way the other sons that were mentioned did.

A Manning has never won a High School State Championship, a College National Championship or a Heisman. Actually, Arch is going to make it very difficult for Texas to recruit a real 5 star because Texas will be giving preface to “Little Arch”.

Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Steve Young, Brett Favre, John Elway (I can keep going)... not HS Championship...College NC or Heisman (Tom Brady threw 15 passes for Michigan in 1997 so I guess he won a NC on a technicality). You speak as though that is common for QBs.

Everyone in Louisiana knows he is not a 5 star. Most of us don’t even think he’s the best qb in the state. Could be good, maybe. But, with his hype Texas better win 2 national titles, which we know isn’t happening.

People don't follow basketball recruiting close to as much as they do football so there really isn't much incentive to pump up Jordan and Lebron's kids to gin up subscriptions. And I really doubt Joe Montana's kid playing in the middle of California more than 20 years after Joe's last NFL game is getting as much attention as Arch playing in the middle of SEC country 3 years after the last Manning took an NFL snap. Not the same.

We may know for 2 years because he will not beat out Ewers at Texas.

Has he thrown at any camps? That’s part of the eval process too.

He’s going to have to win 3 nc’s and 3 Heismans to even meet the hype the media has put on this little boy.

What does he have to do with all of this and who are these people? Every university would have signed him if given a chance.

What, I like the kid from afar. But he is not a five star. I haven't seen anyone say they don't like the kid.

I know how this goes but obviously not on this level. I have a kid that media and fans hyped which made other fans bash and attack my kid for no reason. It's just the nature of anonymous message boards. All talk no spine.
