Here's How Scott Frost Would Do The College Football Playoff
© Derik Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports
UCF head coach/current Nebraska head coach Scott Frost was not happy his 12-0 team is not playing for a National Championship. This is how he'd like to see College Football Playoff get fixed...
quote:

8 teams. Automatic bids to the five Power 5 conference champions. Three at-large teams. If one of the Group of 5 teams have a season like UCF did, they get one of those at-large berths
He elaborates...
quote:

“I’d love to see it go to eight (teams),” he said on SportsCenter this morning. “I think eight could include five conference champions and three at-large teams, and if one of the Group of 5 teams has a season like we had at UCF, then maybe they deserve to get in. I like any sport – and I heard Coach Saban say this – I like any sport where things are decided on the field and it’s not subjective, the champion isn’t decided by 12 people sitting in a board room.”
Thoughts?

this is what will eventually happen whether we like it or not

People will say that this is sour grapes because of how the season went for frost, but this absolutely needs to happen

Sounds better than what we have in place.

8 teams could work. I mean FCS does 16. Oh that's right...the bowl bids. If they changed the bowls up to be neutral sites, they could host the games as the NCAA tournament for football. It's not really that hard. I've been saying this for years. 8 teams is a start in the right direction. But...sorry Nick..and Alabama...you'd have to win your conference. Alabama would likely get in under the "at-large" bid but conference win would be mandatory.

That's fine with Bama and us Bama fans. However, currently there is NOT a pre-requisite that you MUST win your conference. It definitely helps as something like 80plus percent of those teams that have won their conference have made the playoffs but it's not mandatory. Stop trying to hold it against Alabama. They just proved they belonged by putting the clamps on Clemson, who we all agreed was #1.

Look...all I'm saying is...Nick previously said you need to win your conference to get in...then when it benefited his team...he reversed his statements....in the political world that's called flip-flopping. I guess the great Nick Saban can do that as well as any politician.

"They just proved they belonged by putting the clamps on Clemson, who we all agreed was #1." I never thought Clemson was number one.

I've been a fan of this plan for years now. You can keep the playoff committee...let them choose the 3 at-large teams and do the playoff seeding. For the Group of 5 teams, have some sort of automatic qualifier to minimize controversy. Something like the highest-ranked G5 conference champion is given an automatic berth given that they finished undefeated and defeated at least two P5 teams.

I have been saying this for a long time

That format would be perfectly fine with me. That would give my beloved Bama an even better chance of making the playoffs and it will be funny when a four or five loss conference champion makes that 8 team playoff. It’s always Alabama that causes changes to the rules. In 1964 Bama win the NC before the bowl games so they changed the rules. In 2011 Bama wins an NC so they change the rules. Hopefully 2017 will cause another rule change.

It's pretty much a given that a four or five-win P5 conference champion would be an anomaly. Sure, it may happen, but rarely. Even so, 9-7 division champions make the NFL playoffs all the time, and nobody complains.

"In 1964 Bama win the NC before the bowl games so they changed the rules." Is this true greycoat? Seems to me that Texas was named the National Champion before their bowl game in either 69 or 70. I might be wrong though.

It will change to an 8 team format. Wouldnt be surpriesed if it happened this offseason

There has to be a unanimous vote for that to happen so I doubt it will go down this offseason but I hope it happens soon.

UCF had an absolute pansy schedule. There are many teams that could have gone undefeated playing UCONNs, etc. UCF might be a too 10 team, nothing else.

They had a pansy schedule and finished the season undefeated by taking down an SEC powerhouse. What's your point? It wasn't like Auburn gave them the win.

It does not matter where you draw the line, the first two or three teams out are going to complain. If its top 4, 5 &6 are going to whine... if its 68, then 69, 70, 71 whine... And I have a hard time believing that an 8 team format would not bring in more money, no matter how you do it, and this is all about the $$$ anyway... So what are we waiting for?

This would still be ideal. Let every p5 champ in and then a wild card or so.

Its different complaining about being #5 and #9 . 9 will usually be a 2 loss team.

Win your conference or shut up. Simple as that.
user avatar
beauchristopher76 months
This is exactly what my friend suggested. I am down. I think all p5 champs should go to the playoff and represent. This would be so exciting and fun.

This has been said be more than a few other coaches. It's common sense.

I blame you for this, Auburn.

There are many conference champions most years not worthy of being in a playoff. Do you believe a 9-3 team should make a "Final 8"? Good college football programs fire their Head Coaches often for going 9-3.
user avatar
ssgrice76 months
You don't win your conference by not taking care of business. If 9-3 team wins a P5 then they should be in.

I don't want to see 8 teams for the simple fact that I don't want to watch a first round full of arse whippings. Also don't want to make the regular season mean less. The do or die regular season is what makes CFB great.
user avatar
UGATiger2676 months
With an 8-team playoff, the first round wouldn't exactly be a bunch of #1/#16 NCAA tourney match-ups.

8 teams is a dog fight. Imagine a Penn State playing Clemson?

Why not extend and leave it at 6 teams. Then you have all P5 champions and then one G5 wildcard. Make the G5 play the Number 1 P5 right out of the gate to see his worth. If David can take down Goliath, win/win so ESPN will have some more of their storylines. If Goliath stomps out David, no harm no foul, that’s how it was meant to be. Either outcome of these scenarios is still a W. More teams, more capital, bigger checks to all JMO

They’re going to have to shake it up one way or a Another anyway because soon CFB Playoff ratings will start seeing a decrease in views for the simple fact the same teams will be there year in and year out. Now think if shite talking UCF got to face Bama to prove they could possibly make a good game of it in the first quarter or so, that’s must see tv. Millions would tune in every year hoping to have one of this “where were you when UCF beat Bama” memories. That’s when it goes from a cash cow to the cash herd.

8 teams is perfect, and most people know it. 5 conference champs get in, thus preserving the value of winning your conference. Then 3 at large bids, to allow other deserving teams to get it. Quarters, semis, finals. It's perfect. 10 or 12 teams is too much and extends the playoffs an extra week. 8 is enough.
