BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (August 21, 2025) - The Southeastern Conference (SEC) today announced it will implement a nine-game football schedule beginning in 2026, reinforcing the SEC’s position as the nation’s leader in competitive excellence and fan excitement. The decision, approved by the SEC’s Presidents and Chancellors following a recommendation by the league’s Athletics Directors, was announced by Commissioner Greg Sankey.

“Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities’ commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.”

Under the new format:

-The SEC will continue with a single-standings, non-divisional structure;

-Each school will play three annual opponents focused on maintaining many traditional rivalries;

-Each team’s remaining six games will rotate among the remaining conference schools; and

-Each team will face every other SEC program at least once every two years and every opponent home and away in four years.

SEC teams are required to schedule at least one additional high quality non-conference from the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten or Big 12 conferences or Notre Dame each season. The SEC will continue to evaluate its policies to ensure the continued scheduling of high-quality non-conference opponents.

“The SEC has established itself as the leader in delivering the most compelling football schedule in college athletics,” Sankey said. “Fans will see traditional rivalries preserved, new matchups more frequently, and a level of competition unmatched across the nation.”

The SEC has played eight conference games each season since 1992 when the conference first expanded from 10 to 12 teams with the addition of Arkansas and South Carolina. The SEC played seven conference games per year from 1988-1991 and six games from 1974-1987. Prior to 1974 there was no uniform requirement for the number of conference games to be played by each school, with most schools playing six or seven league contests per year.

The SEC makes up the entire Top 14 most difficult SOS's in FBS aside from Wisconsin at 5th. There is only 1 Big 10 team in the Top 15. 8 game SEC is exponentially more difficult than any other conference's 9 game slate. This should get Sankey fired in my opinion. He really fricked this one up incredibly bad.

All driven by Rev share. I am sure the school don’t really want it, but if it is another mil a year from ESPN what choice do you have at this day and age

It was the only option and was inevitable. We've known this for years

These players are now pros. The NFL is always aiming for parity and it’s the most dominant large there is. I don’t see why the SEC should bother with uncompetitive directional matchups

Dumb, but money is all that matters here.

I like it. We can play teams like Clemson in the playoffs. Now schedule Tulane and two other Louisiana teams every year.

This should guarantee 3 SEC teams in the playoff but it wont.

Uh oh. One “high quality” non-conference opponent? Oh man, Missouri is screwed!

Just play the games.

This really hurts the bubble teams from the SEC trying to get into the playoffs. They will be compared to teams like Texas Tech with a perfect or 1 loss record, despite playing crap teams each week. Now the SEC bubble teams have yet another tough SEC game to deal with. Fire Sankey

I think it will create a scenario where nobody schedules OOC games against anyone with a heartbeat. That’s fine with me though since we’ve had some schedule a legit opponent to start the season while others have done 4 rent a wins.

Why? They’re not compelled to do this. Sankey acts like puffing out his chest over toughest schedule is going to put more SEC teams in the playoffs. It’s not. Time to do away with the conference championship game. Let’s not force a loss on our second best team.
