Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard's name has surfaced over the past few days as a potential replacement for Brian Kelly.

The former LSU linebacker won a national championship with the Tigers in 2007. He returned to Baton Rouge in 2020 to begin his coaching career as LSU's Director of Player Development before joining Detroit's staff as outside linebacker coach in 2021.

Sheppard recently spoke the media and addressed the rumors that link him to the LSU job. Per MLive:
quote:

But Sheppard said he “can’t be interested in something I have no idea about.” The defensive coordinator said he’s tasked with another Tiger this weekend in Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, “so that’s what I’m interested in.”

“But the truth of the matter is nobody has contacted me about anything dealing with a job outside of anything I’m doing right now,” Sheppard said.

“And that’s the honest truth.”

“I’m very blessed and fortunate to hold the position that I do here as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, a winning, soon-to-be-championship organization,” Sheppard said. “And I don’t take that lightly. And whether you’re in this position or you’re a QC (quality control coach) or you’re a janitor, if you start to look out for other things, you will lose the things that you do hold on to currently ... I’ve seen it happen to players chasing contracts, chasing plays on the field instead of letting things come to you when you put your head down.

“I didn’t get to this position by trying to be the defensive coordinator in Detroit. I got to this position by understanding what my role was within this organization. I got to this position by understanding you got to put your head down and go back to work, whether you have success or failure ... And whatever may lie out there for me, God willing, that’s going to happen through success in my current position, not through anything else, not by politicking for anything. Not by trying to set headlines a certain way, but by putting my head down and giving this organization the best version of myself. And that’s what I plan to continue to do.”

I'm curious, if Frank Wilson runs the table and finish 9-4, how would y'all feel about him being named the official LSU HC?

If we're truly considering sheppard just because we liked him as a player, why aren't we going after tyrann, Flynn, hester, mettenberger...faulk. I mean how thin of a resume or we really willing to tolerate

A defensive coordinator in the NFL is not the same as head coach at LSU. Having said that, the question is whether or not Sheppard is a good leader of men. Can he think on his feet? Does he bleed purple and gold? Can he adjust to fame situations, efficiently? Can he coach? Can he effectively communicate? Is he believable? Can he effectively recruit? Can he handle appeasing financial supporters of the program? Can he motivate players? If all of the boxes are checked, he deserves consideration.

"if you start to look out for other things, you will lose the things that you do hold on to currently ... I’ve seen it happen to players chasing contracts, chasing plays on the field instead of letting things come to you when you put your head down." frickin' A, man. What a quote.

He would be a good DC.

If Kelvin Sheppard actually became head coach, I’d consider it the biggest disappointment of LSU this century and would seriously question what is going on. That’s just an honest, unbiased truth.

This guy is gonna be very successful. We won't hire him because the timing isn't right, maybe if BK had lasted another year and KS has another season under his belt. But this may end up being a guy we look at in 5 years and wish we had taken a chance

Hire this man. Love his mindset and passion for the game, he is a leader and a winner. Surround him with experience, he will get the most out of his guys.

How many dumb LSU fans are not capable of understanding that just because you liked him as a player has absolutely 0 bearing on him getting LSU to the CFP.

How did the last young vibrant defensive coordinator from the Vikings work out as a lsu coach?

Daronte wasn’t the DC for the Vikings. Also not sure what the Vikings have to do with Sheppard. Next

Needs more seasoning. Only 2 years as a DC. Maybe after we fire our next hire.

Love KS but LSU HC position is not for someone that has never been a HC before. Yes you gotta start somewhere but LSU is not a starting point job.

OSU coach is a first time HC, Georgia, Oregon, Michigan, OU, Clemson. 5 NCs in that.

Tell me how much college coaching experience KS has compared to Lanning, Day, Smart, Venables, etc.

That's a good answer. I absolutely loved Kelvin Sheppard as a player and would be extremely excited if he got the job.

I’d be extremely pessimistic if Sheppard who has never been a head coach and just started at DC would go onto be LSU HC. I’d consider it a massive failure. See things objectively. Him being one of your favorite players has absolutely 0 bearing on him being a good head coach for LSU.
