NFL veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu is not expected to return to the Kansas City Chiefs next season in free agency, according to multiple reports.

The New Orleans Saints could be a potential landing spot for the former LSU star, according to Bleacher Report:
quote:

Mathieu grew up in New Orleans and played college football at LSU, creating a potential homecoming situation for the 29-year-old.

The Saints finished last season with the No. 4 scoring defense in the NFL but could use safety help with Marcus Williams set to hit free agency.

Mathieu could help replace Williams as a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro selection. The veteran finished last year with 76 tackles, one sack and three interceptions, returning one of those for a touchdown. He had 13 interceptions over his three seasons with the Chiefs.

The question is whether New Orleans can afford Mathieu with the team currently sitting $42.3 million over the salary cap, per Spotrac, worst in the NFL.

Hope he goes to a good team.

As much as he has matured since his time as a Tiger, I would love to see TM7 stay as far away from the cesspool of New Orleans as possible. His actions when "at home" have always been his weakness.

Half the posters on the Rant said he was too small and would never make it in the NFL. LOL.

Says the guy who signed up in 2014. I was actually here and if you think half the rant said that then I want some of what you’re smoking.

Maybe now that Payton is gone, the Saints will start getting more LSU players.

I’d like them to bring Williams back AND somehow get Mathieu. Malcolm Jenkins isn’t getting any younger and Dennis Allen likes to play 3 safeties a big amount of time. Jenkins was a Sean Payton guy so if we could release him and save some money against the cap then bring in Mathieu that would be a dream. We would have hands down the best safety group in football with Mathieu, Williams and CGJ.

No, thanks. Declining player who has an inflated opinion of himself.
