LSU coach Brian Kelly was on ESPN's College Gameday podcast last week and was asked about the linebackers Whit Weeks and Harold Perkins Jr.

Kelly said that both Weeks and Perkins will be ready to go after recovering from injuries sustained last season:
quote:

"They’re in everything, so it’s been a great recovery," Kelly said.

"They’ve worked really hard. I think our training staff has done an amazing job of getting both of these guys to the point where they’re already taking part in June activities and football-related activities. Both of them will be ready."

"They are excited because they come into a year where they know a lot of the success will fall around them as players."
Kelly was also asked about Perkins' progression in LSU's defense and his new role at the STAR position:
quote:

"Our first year, we kept it simple for him and played him on the edge and gave him the ability to get after the quarterback and be less structured," Kelly explained.

"As we went into year two, we thought the development of him as a linebacker needed to be inside, and that was a difficult transition for him, quite frankly. And I can say we made a mistake with that. We need to put our players in the best position for them to succeed."

"We have settled in on moving him to the outside, where he'll play our STAR position. He can match up against tight ends and slots that are not running all the way down the field."

"And he can be on the field all three downs, move him around, and make him difficult to pick up and blitz protection. That’s what we settled on. He’s excited about it, and I really look for him to have an impact on what we do week in and week out."

"We need to just let him play, just go, get your cleats in the ground and go play. It got too complicated. We have a really good player here. Let him feel comfortable and rip it."

No shite BK, congrats on figuring out what we all said 1/4 through the season last year and exposing weaknesses on our best defensive draft prospect

It was clear from the beginning it wasn’t going to work with him at ILB. How they couldn’t see that is strange.

It was also on Perkins. He was deliberately taking himself out of plays and avoiding contact. I think the cancers that were driving a lot of that are gone. Here’s to a Perk that can play with a little Reckless Abandon.

It’s crazy they made one of the most dynamic players in the country as a true freshman invalid for all that time. This staff and roster is paid too much to let those type of mistakes happen.

this is the right role for him IMO, he just needs to ball out this year.

In the future, give us something more than just paraphrasing what Kelly is already quoted as saying. I’d rather read comments that add something to the topic. My Yelp review for your comment is a 1 out of 10. Get your shite together baw.

In the future keep your toxic opinions on other posters to yourself.

It looks like Lamar Brown won't be going to LSU. But it's his loss. Our recruiting class is top notch and he won't be able to be a part of it. Fortunately him not being a part of it won't hurt this class. There is plenty of talent to replace and surpass it

Well you did give something not covered in the original article. 2 out of 10. Better than that other dude.

I have much more optimism in Harold Perkins this year because we finally got good DBs. Our 3 starting DB transfers put up a combined 12 INTs and 5 Force Fumbles just last year. Just last year 17 turnovers. That means Perkins doesn't have to drop into coverage so much like last year because we had horrible DBs. That opens him up to rush the QB more which is what he is built to do.

Anyone that paid attention last year, did it seem he dropped into pass coverage a lot more in 2024 than 2022?

yes. He isn't a pass defender. And covering big Tight ends isn't easy for a linebacker

He has over an 81 coverage grade, which is excellent. Puts him in the top 15 of college linebackers. He defends it well, and he can turn and run.

I can't wait to see the destruction, havoc Whit and Perkules will be dishing out against the enemies.

Don't forget about those two defensive end transfers who will complement the pass rush tremendously

LSU has really screwed up this harold perkins position changes. its a shame to get paid that much money and not know how to use such a talent.

You have some great hindsight vision. How would you have done it differently?

Honestly they were really looking out for Perk, the position he played as a freshman didn't help his advancement to the next level. So they moved him to the middle with approval from Perk and his family, but Perk couldn't handle the position change. So stop blaming BK he knew like everybody else knew there was no future for a really undersized pass rusher in the NFL. So now Perkules is right where he belongs, the Star position which actually exists in the NFL. Now he can move around so that they don't know where he's coming from, so his production should be better than his freshman and sophomore season.

There are some things you cannot know without trying. I tried having sex with Salma Hayek. Did not like it as much as I thought I would. Turns out I prefer Italians. Who knew?
