Paul Skenes looked sharp during his short, one-inning spring training debut on Thursday. Per The Big League:
quote:

Skenes only worked one inning, but dominated three excellent Baltimore Orioles hitters. He got top prospect Jackson Holliday to ground out to second, forced flyouts from Adley Rutschman and Heston Kjerstad.

The in-stadium radar gun regularly registered over 100 mph and had Skenes topping out out at 102. The crazy part is it looked effortless.

Paul has a gift he understands a hitter’s situation meaning he is not just a thrower but very smart understands the game thinks like a veteran not a rookie

He was the best college pitcher in America last year… yes better than the Wake Forrest kid (he beat him head to head) and if you think he’s only got speed, you are just ignorant & arrogantly think you know better than pro ball scouts. His draft position was no joke.

LSU won the game and he was definitely the best pitcher in the country but he didn’t really beat him head to head. Both left the game scoreless and LSU hit a walkoff HR off of a different pitcher. Neither Skenes nor Lowder got a decision and I seriously doubt you’d say Lowder beat him head to head if Wake won that game scoring off of someone else.

You may not "need" 100 mph but if you have it and know how to use it that's an advantage. You can bet the guys pitching upper 80's low 90's wish they could hit 100.

You can throw in the upper 80’s/low 90’s in the majors if you can command 4 pitches to all four corners at any point in the count.
You don’t need 100. You need command of 4 pitches and a great catcher.

Yah, but…102 is nice to have.

Pounding the zone. He'll need to spin that off speed pitch to keep these guys guessing and off balance. Great work.

Pitch at 102 but how fast was the ball off the bat?

Clemons owned the plate with his ability to pitch inside. Skenes will get there and when he does, OMG!!

No matter how fast you throw it, pros will barrel it up. He will develop a better off speed pitch or sacrifice some velocity for movement and he will be just fine

You think Paul Skenes doesn't have an offspeed pitch? Are you fricking serious?

Yeah some of you peoples commmets let’s me know that you obviously don’t know Skenes ability as a pitcher. Develop movement ??. His 2 seam fastball moves 18”-23”. His slider/ slurve is absolutely ridiculous. College players hit off of him as well but they didn’t do it consistently. Plus we don’t know what either team is trying to accomplish here? Only pitching him 1 inning tells me there was a specific goal in mind and this wasn’t about competing at his best. They very well could have said go pitch fastballs and let’s see if you can get them out? That could have easily been all there was to it. He has a great slider/ curve that he can throw from different angles and make it move different directions based on lefty vs righty. He also has a good change up that can be filthy when mixed with his different fastballs and slider/curve. He didn’t show any of that in this video. Of course pro hitters can hit fastballs, but can they hit them in the gaps? Can they time it, to hit into a gap? Looks like no to me. Looks like they just swung the bat to make contact. Looks like Skenes still in control. A solo HR isn’t a deal anyway. Can they put multiple at bats up to drive in runs? That’s how you hurt a pitcher. Skenes is more than fine. Just took down some of the best rookies with his fast ball ??.

Stick with armchair quarterbacking. When you have at least an elementary level understanding of Major League Baseball, come back to the conversation.
