Had Auburn made the CFP, an Auburn vs Clemson game would have been a mulligan. And, had UA made it as well, an Auburn vs UA rematch would have been a mulligan. As it stands, none of the 4 CFP teams have played, which means no mulligan. Was the spot a deserved or undeserved gift that they lucked/backed into ... yes.
