John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports
In an interview with USA TODAY, Greg Byrne said the SEC Championship Game may have “run its course.”

Introduced in 1992, the Southeastern Conference title game was once groundbreaking, but the expanded College Football Playoff has reduced its importance. Byrne called it a great event but suggested it may no longer make sense moving forward.

quote:

“I think the ship has sailed. It’s run its course,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said of the SEC championship game, during an exclusive interview with USA TODAY.

“It’s a great event,” Byrne said of the SEC championship game. “I don’t like the idea of it going away, but I think it’s reality, with an expanded playoff.”

Byrne emphasized he’s but one voice, but he must know he’s a prominent voice. He’s not alone in his opinion, either

I strongly disagree with this ! Conference Championship games help out who will be playing who in the bowl games . If they want 2 cancel the SEC Championship game then they should cancel all Conference Championship games . Overall I think they shouldn’t cancel any of the Conference Championship games .

The SEC Championship game is the National Championship. All else is fluff.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the Alabama AD does not come to this decision until after Georgia annihilates them in the last SEC Championship game. [rolls eyes]

Alabama approached that game exactly as it should have: as a scrimmage, nothing more.
