It's from the German ß, that weird big B that is actually a hard S.

Hell yeah we claim him -- and he absolutely claims Arkansas.
re: Your new LR mayor just closed War Memorial Golf Course

The idea is being floated around trying to get a Top Golf there. I'd rather them turn it into a park and still allow the best tailgating in the state.
The Top Golf in War Memorial is such a terrible idea because it would hand over some of the best property in the city to a private company.
I'm a huge fan of bigger city parks that are developed in a way that allow for multiple uses with multiple smaller structures throughout. The golf course is 90 acres. If you add in the other war memorial structures (zoo, stadium, gym), I think the whole thing is 200 acres. Centennial Park in Atlanta is only 22 acres and it feels even bigger. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is 500+ acres but feels like twice that. War Memorial Park feels small. A better use plan would fix that, but I'm not super sold on what's been proposed so far. Feels like we're gearing up for a missed opportunity, especially since you don't have to develop it all at once while in a bad budget situation.
Hindman, however, feels like a great opportunity for a park that could really build some neat programs around canoeing, cycling, outdoor-sy stuff of all kinds.
re: Spinoff thread: what dorm did you live in?

Yocum. :(
There was a guy who lived on the floor who was from western Arkansas and decided he was going to work out and get strong so instead of going to the HPER and working out he bought a bag of birdseed (cheap!) and ran around campus. Dude thought he was getting stronger because it got easier and easier, but then he discovered a small hole and it was just the bag was getting lighter and lighter.

What a load of shite.
Poor Little Rock being held back by meanies in Northwest Arkansas.
Maybe Little Rock could learn something from Northwest Arkansas for Christ's sake.
You know how I know you don't live here? Ask anyone voting in Little Rock what their issues were and you'd hear some combo of schools, highways, police, etc., with an eye to the future. All of those things have leadership that's gamed their way to being in control, leadership that doesn't live or vote in Little Rock, and leadership we can't vote on either. NWA has little to do with it outside of having representatives that grant the State the power to grossly overextend their authority in terms of school takeover and the 30 crossing project. A huge majority of police don't live here, either.
Self-determination of a city and leadership accountability is incredibly important to maintaining a vibrant community. I'm not thrilled about the incredible state overreach in my city, and if it happened in your town, I'd like to think i'd be on your side too.

Jeff Long could have just suspended him without pay for the whole season.
Not possible.
Football reasons: People tolerate an a-hole if the wins are coming in - you saw what the team was capable doing with a stand-in coach, and it wasn't great!
Legal reasons: he hired his side piece for a job and circumvented affirmative action and EEOC policies to do it. (Long was complicit in this too! He got the waiver, if I recall. Someone had to go.)

Little Rock would be doing much better if people from outside of it kept their nose out of trying to "fix" it.

If there's two things hipsters love, it's the first thing and then parking the biggest car in the smallest parallel parking spot.
Three things? Building a bank in any available lot.
