Steve Spurrier Calls College Football An 'unfair sport' In NIL Era
© Matt Stamey-USA TODAY Sports
Speaking on Another Dooley Noted Podcast with Pat Dooley, former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier called the current state of college football "unfair."...
quote:

“It is a very unfair sport right now,” Spurrier said. “Scott Frost, the new UCF coach, he had some comments in the paper here recently and he said, ‘we’re a school that can’t give out the big money. We don’t have multi-millionaire boosters.’ A lot of these schools have billionaire guys that say, ‘Let me know how much you need.’ He said, ‘We don’t have it, so we’re not gonna be able to recruit these guys or if we do get a real good player, he’s gone the next year.’

“You would think they gotta put a cap on it. I don’t care if it’s $40 million or $20 million. Just put a limit of what people can spend and try to make it a little bit fair. But it’s gonna be the some old schools up there every year.”

If they do make changes, the "Bag Man" ways of old will just take its' place.

The Old Ball Coach is right on . College football is not what it should be . Out of control and will not be liked without a fair playing field.

College football is out of control because it’s a huge payday for the athletes and they have to get as much as they can in case they get hurt and the gravy train stops. The only way to reduce that fear and bring sanity to college football is to pay high school athletes a reasonable amount of money. They put their careers at risk every down - we need to stop taking advantage of them.

I think we need to start paying them when they're in daycare, personally.

college football is unrecognizable from just a few years ago. Very sad.

If they cap the money we’re right back where we were some teams get away with spending more and teams like LSU get wire tapped

OBC and Saban need to be running CFB.

Correct he is. I remember the days in 60s/70s before NCAA stepped in to limit amount of players on a squad. Bama, USC, Notre Dame etc would have 150 plus players dress out for a game. They need to fix all this craziness.

He is right. NCAA needs to put a cap on the NIL money for players to make it an even playing field. Otherwise, the schools with big money boosters will control the game with their teams being in the mix every year.

Wasn't Washington in the Nati last year? Can you name any university like that from 2010 to 2022? No, not really.

Add in TCU in 2023. Can't name any college like that from 2000 to today. It was all USC, OU, Bama, LSU, Auburn, Ohio St, Miami, Clemson, etc.

Just like everything else that involves BIG money, just give it time. It will work itself out. When the big schools get sued for breach of contract or employment law violations, workers comp, etc. etc, meaningful change WILL take place.

so he wants a salary cap like the NFL?

That would at least be a start

And the big schools would still cheat.

Yea they would, but then there would be a penalty. Get caught, lose players and salary cap. Not saying it's perfect, but something does need to happen to get this roped in.

This just in, college football was always a very unfair sport.

Pretty much. It was unfair when it was illegal and it is still unfair now that it is legal. It is all about the money.
