There won't be any downstream consequences because ACCPD definitely won't be cutting UGA players any slack. And the AJC is waiting with bated breath to report every UGA traffic stop. Other college towns will cut them slack and it won't be recorded or reported.
I'm fine with letting the legal system deal with most of this juvenile behavior. It's not a UGA football problem other than the fact that some in the media try to make it one. DUI is a special case and repeat offenders already get harsh punishment for that in both the legal system and the UGA system. It's probably a moot point for football players now, because after the 2nd offense most will be transferring to someplace where law enforcement is more accommodating.

You missed part of my point. The lack of discretion (or slack) is a downstream consequence.

I have received only two speeding tickets my entire life (I've been pulled over a few times, but only received two speeding tickets). One of my tickets was while I was a student at UGA, driving a very slow '72 VW bug. I was super poor and the cop caught me in a speed trap on a side road. Can confirm Athens cops like to hand out tickets and find creative ways to catch you speeding.

You must be a new UGA fan. The absence of slack for UGA football players isn't a downstream consequence, it's a longstanding policy in Athens. They arrest football players for minor things that don't even warrant the waste of taxpayer time and money, forget about any slack for driving 80 miles an hour.
How many rival football players have you seen arrested for popping firecrackers on July 4th (the horror), and then charged with obstruction for not telling the cop his middle name? How many were arrested for "emerging from an alley", or walking on the sidewalk with a beer in hand (not public intoxication, holding a beer on the sidewalk), or passing on the right on their moped (the car was stopped)? How many are arrested for quietly falling asleep in a bar bathroom (shades of Ron White, arrested for being drunk in a bar)? How many get arrested for smoking pot in a dorm (they could've hauled half my floor on Russell to the clink 5 nights a week), or face felony charges for shooting red solo cups with BB gun? UGA and Athens cops love to show off their no-slack policy when it comes to UGA football.
