Sounds like no one really knows yet why, but potentially mental. If he’s truly happier not playing and needed to get out of the sport, then I support it. Life isn’t about doing something you hate just because you’re built for it

Gonna call bullshite on that. Doesn't make sense to get through spring and fall camp and then quit a week before the game due to the grind.
If I had to guess this is a NIL related hold out. He was going to start at Nose for us. Big money year for draft status.

He was not going to start. Jordan Hall was generating some buzz in fall camp. McLeod was great in the rotation. Hate it he is no longer with the team.

I don’t get it. Suck it up and play hard for a few more months, do well at the combine, and you suddenly have more $ than most people will make their entire life.

Edit: Derrick Lott did this to us in 2012. I think it cost us a natty as we didn't have any DL depth.
After Abry Jones' injury, it forced Johnathan Jenkins away from his natural NT position to DT. It forced Kwame Geathers to start NT. Losing 1 player downgraded 2 spots on a team competing for a national championship due to lack of depth.

It's all guessing, but that's what people on message boards do. My guess would be an attitude issue and a mutual decision on behalf of coach and player.

Strange timing but it's not necessarily a bad decision to give up football, especially if the player has a history of repetitive injury or concussion symptoms. If there's some other reason, I guess we'll find out when the transfer portal opens later this year.
As for Georgia, interior DL depth is still good but I always hate losing experienced players before the season begins.

Other than tight end and MLB, if somebody had to quit the team right before the season, it's probably best they were a defensive lineman. Griffin and Josh Horton are locked in. Ogboko is a giant and started getting some snaps towards the end of last season. Nasir Johnson is just as big and now in his third year of the program. Heard a lot of buzz about JJ Hanne last fall camp, but not as much this one. And then Coach Donnan thinks that V. Sonne will be the real deal sooner rather than later.

CKS said on today's teleconference that the team has been prepared to play without McLeod for almost all of August. This isn't a new development.

Yes and no.
I remember when Caleb King became academically inelligible. He literally packed up his belongings and was ready to leave school in 2010 (per a dorm mate on the secrant). They were able to try several things to get his GPA up. It wasnt until summer of 2011 that he ran out of options.
But let's just say that 30 other players had been in the exact same situation over the past 15 years. And during those extreme extenuating circumstances, they were able to get their GPA up.
Should UGA beat writers bury the lead about academic ineligibility issues before every last ounce of opportunity has passed? These 30 players were forced to spend time away from the team. But they fixed their problems. How much should the beat writer report? Where is the line of reporting "things" as issues before they are official issues (off the team)?
