There is a town in middle Georgia where a large family with that name pronounces it like that. Most people in the community do to when referring to them.

When I was stationed at Ft. Gordon, my Cuban buddy says...”let’s go to the Krystal over in Mar-teen-es” ...and was quickly corrected to Martin-EZ...he said, “WTF? You gonna tell a Cuban man how to pronounce a Spanish name?” The guy says, “Nope. Martin-EZ is French.”

You can’t make shite like this up.

Honestly think it's an Alabama thing. I've got a buddy from Birmingham with the last name spelled Jordan, pronounces it "Jurdan". No family affiliation with Shug/Awbuwn.

When we started school at UGA he quickly switched to pronouncing it "Jordan" when meeting new people, and still does today unless we're around people from Alabama.

What about Taliaferro County, pronounced by all 6 people that live there as tal-uh-ver.

Weird as shite.

Why is it weird?

Funny how actual real Southerners are smeared as backwards and intolerant, but hey.......look at this thread of enlightened cutting edge go-getters mad because someone somewheres actually still has a unique culture in the cookie-cutter milk-toast states of America.

You can thank Governor John Houstoun for Houston County's [link=(pronunciation)]https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/government-politics/john-houstoun-ca-1747-1796[/link]. It's a great way to screen for sales calls though. You can't sell me anything unless you pronounce the county name right.

Also challenging is getting people to understand you are from Rhine, but it is not spelled "Ryan."

Live it up while you can though.

Once they’ve toppled all the monuments and taken down the flags, you will then be sent to a re-education camp to learn to pronounce the names of your ancestors and home “properly”.

Everything.

It's the same concept. Ignorant/arrogant outsiders trying to deny a region their culture and traditions dot dot dot dot dot dot and to try and make it conform to THEIR outsider worldview and perspective instead. Dot dot dot dot dot dot
