I know this trend was true for most of rural America but Taliaferro County’s population peaked in the 1940s. Whenever I’m down there it certainly feels extra deserted compared to Warren McDuffie Ogle Wilkes etc. I always wonder what people do for work, they can’t all work at the pallet factory. I guess many commute to surrounding counties or cruise/cut timber.

I had read a lot about AH Stephens a few months ago, and it was cool to read about Taliaferro Co tonight. I only made it down there once this year (new parent) and I just road cruised for snakes around Sharon. Saw a coyote and a few copperheads.

It wasn't exactly hopping in the late 70's but it was better than today - and like being a kid in a Rockwell painting. Riding bikes to school and putting pennies on the railroad track kind of thing.

I can definitely see that. Can I ask what your parents did for work back in those days?

I drive a lot in the rural southeast looking for critters to photograph, and I always wonder what life is/was like for people that live off the beaten path. I come from a multigenerational southern family (upstate SC; Seneca/Townville) but I’m sad to say I never knew what my great grandparents did for a living. Grandparents worked in the textile mills that used to blanket that area.

I think I misinterpreted a post. Somebody said this wasn't Chi-town and I thought they meant you were originally from there. Sorry for the insult lol.

Dad worked in the park. Back then, Crawfordville still was a functional small town....now it's basically deserted.

Squatch, I know what you are talking about. My ancestors came from England and Wales, as far as we can determine. They got off the boat some time before the Revolution. I heard many terms and sayings, when I was a kid, that were straight out of England. People in rural areas tended to keep customs and speech patterns for many generations, especially before radio and TV. I find these old words and terms very interesting.
