The homeless in Athens were mainly black in the 80s. There were a couple dudes that were legit crazy. Some I think were not homeless. They just figured out how to get money from drunk students. I’m not saying they were rich... just were enterprising. They kinda had rules and a territory. It wasn’t too bad. Then, after Widespread got popular, it seemed like a whole new version showed up. Deadheads in their 20s-40s. These weren’t regular Deadheads. They were filthier and likely heroin addicts. They came for the shows and stayed for the money/food. You started to get an increase in guitar and 5 gallon bucket street musician beggars too. In recent days, I note that you have all of the above, plus even more opportunists. They seem much more aggressive, because they can be and due to competition. I personally don’t care for that aspect. With that said, having had to work in San Francisco a good bit the last few years, Athens has a long way to go to be in their level of horrible.

FWIW, that one lady is not homeless, just appears to be. She actually has a house at The Landings.

I live in Yulee Fl now and not one exists here. BUT... Jacksonville is Mecca for homeless. Try going by the train station on a Monday morning it’s disgusting

Downtown by the old Carlin hotel is really bad but that's the only place I've seen them concentrated since I've lived here

That's a bad spot too you're right. They seem to be a certain demographic. twenty something Caucasians with the severe stinky hippie look.

She might as well be homeless. She has no running water or electricity.

I travel a lot for work but Atlanta still is tops in homeless guy hard luck stories. They have the sales pitch down to a science better than any other city I go to.
