What’s up with all the homeless people in Savannah?

Had a great time there a few weeks ago but there were homeless everywhere. The parks were like homeless campgrounds and they were wondering around on every street. It was bad.

To contrast, we were in Charleston this last weekend and saw 1 guy....during the entire trip and about 10 miles of walking. Parks, streets, etc. Nothing.

WTF Savannah?

It’s a problem everywhere. Sounds like Charleston is bussing them down to Savannah. Opioids are a hell of a drug.

Maybe its always been this way but Athens seems to be getting bad.
The intersection by Wuxtry seems to be the main area. We were at Mellow Mushroom with some friends and a homeless person actually came into the restaurant waiting to ask us for money. He tried to talk to my neighbors 13 year old son trying to strike up the "Hey young man you look like you could play for the Dogs one day" blah blah. Then started his money pitch. I almost got into a little scrap with him when i told him to step away and not talk to him. He got pissy and walked out.

You cannot go downtown anymore without getting several asking you for money...

This isn't the only factor, but it is likely one of them.

You bring such nuance to a complex subject.

Savannah has been going downhill for years. Seems like it only gets worse every time I go back to visit.

whatever

It ain't that complex, just crack down. If Rudy could clean up NYC, surely Athens and Savannah can be improved...

I will tell you this, if a homeless person came into a restaurant and was messing with my kid, I'd for certain sure hurt some feelings as well...

Athens has always been that bad.

Regarding Sav, I have been three times over the last 5 years and didnt notice a problem as described by OP. Just here and there. Not encampments on the squares.

It has. Trust me, it's not a new thing. Been here all my life. I rarely venture downtown for anything anymore because you can't avoid it. Plus I just don't have a need these days. Good thing.

The first row of squares by River Street were jammed up...to the point where it was noticeable. Guy was also taking a dump down by the waterfront park with the waving girl when we went down there.

Maybe it was a festival or something.

I guess we were more surprised at the lack of homeless in Charleston as contrast - but there aren’t many open areas in the historic districts and there’s a lot of money there. They probably police that pretty aggressively.

The homeless like college towns - lots of bleeding hearts who force the taxpayers to give until it hurts.

Eh, is pretty much the main reason. Throw in meth/crack and you have about 90% of the reason people are homeless. This myth of homeless people just being down on their luck is just that, a myth. People are usually homeless because they are addicts.

If minimum wage was 15 an hour though... IT WOULD SOLVE EVERYONE’S PROBLEMS...
